How to build a mixed wing: Grouse and Green

I am dabbling in a little video action. My wife bought me a phone holder dealy that clamps to a desk. It works okay but is still not ideal. I have to tie kinda half blind with a stupid phone jutting out between my hands and my face. And the phone camera still has a tough time focusing on the fly as I have my hands moving about (this is why Harry Lemire tied in a vise for instructional videos).

However, I think this will help some get the idea on one way to build an Irish mixed wing.

The subject is the "Grouse and Green". Notice in the video that I use single strands of colored fibers (in this case goose) and a couple of strands of the natural fiber: Bustard and Golden Pheasant. This allows maximum movement of the wing when fished. And on the lighter hook platform used, you definitely do not want a heavy wing or else your fly won't swing true.

Make sure to proportionately match the amount of materials on the given hook platform when tying any pattern.

I again opted to set the bronze mallard atop the wing instead of veiling wing. This makes a fuller looking pattern.

Hope this help those out there interested in building mixed wings.

Cheers,
Adrian

P.S. I will be offline for a couple of weeks on a northern steelhead trip, but in case anyone has questions I will respond when I get back.
