Inspired by Lemire’s fall caddis

On a whim a fishing buddy and I went to the salmon river in NY last Friday to skate flies and see what happened. Nothing to report but I now have a goal to coax a steelhead to the surface this season. I’ve been looking at patterns that could be effective and came up with this October caddis that requires me to substitute a few materials for what I had on hand this AM.

Thanks for the support! Excited to get this wet and see my first steelhead on the surface. I’m going to tie up a green body variation and not take them off until it happens

I am also very curious about bringing a fish to the surface in the Great Lakes region. Check out Mr. Hirano’s “Dryline Steelhead” blog and prepare to be inspired. His Little Wang pattern looks interesting in its various iterations.

Cheers

That's some good tying. Perfectly sparse, the hairs are not too long, the head is trimmed wonderfully. The proportion of material to the style of hook is pretty spot-on.

You will need to hitch or liberally grease the leader to keep this pattern on the surface with that thick of a hookwire (unless your river tends to run swift).

Wonderful work. Lemire patterns are well thought out from an icon with class.
