The Winter Funk ...

This winter weather really has it's grips on me ... my only remedy is tying stuff that I would want to fish on a dry line. At least they help me dream of mild air temps, cool waters, the smell of cedar and fresh runs

Inspired between a Muddler and Doc Spratley, these were tied on Daiichi 2131 #6 hooks. They were a challenge for me to hold onto while spinning the deer hair. I almost need an intervention here ... I can't believe how addicted I am
with working with deer, moose and elk hair

My next dilemma is I don't know whether to hitch them or just grease line them
As always, thoughts and ideas are very much welcomed.

Honest to goodness Mike, I have some of these in my first string box: Pretty similar to your darlings. Must be that great minds think alike. Or maybe it is that the addle-brained stick together?

I don't hitch them, as I like to think their bullet-shaped head makes them perfect "in the film" patterns.

Lousy photos, sorry.

Those are great flies, guys. I would let 'em ride in the surface film and they can duck, dive, and skitter where they please. I'd fish those!

It must be summer! You guys are in summer head already! I am in no better shape, I have been tying wakers all winter, almost done with my sixth dozen for donations to the FFC and NFS.

I like the green one Keith ... I've started already but had to put it down to shovel the driveway
I was going for a Green Highlander look to the next one ... we'll see how it turns out.
I like the idea of just greasing the leader and a tad of grease to the fly and see how she does. Kind of an old school kick ... I dig it
Something about a bug riding in the surface film that screams "eat me" !!
That's the stuff that gives me the steelhead pricklies ....

Point taken Mr. Forbes ... any time an old Salmon Dawg speaks, you best be listening

What do you think of these Mr. Forbes ... think these would fish the pools between Alice and the Swimming Hole ?? Maybe Mad Brook or Gillis ??

Those are more smokin' than Lauren Bacall in The Big Sleep!

Or Key Largo.

And that's smokin!

Oh man, what great muddler variations....!

Mike I feel your pain. My driveway needs shovelling, it's deep in the middle of a Northern Ontario winter, and It will be several months before the rivers let go of their ice up here.
Looking at your summer sk8ters warms the soul.

Thanks

A little Late to the party but holy crap Mike... Thanks for the inspiration, I may just dump out my current boxes and fill them with your inspirational gems thinking they would be just as well liked by trout as Mr Salmon

I think I fish, in part, because it’s an anti-social, bohemian business that, when gone about properly, puts you forever outside the mainstream culture without actually landing you in an institution. –John Gierach

Tight looking dry flyes Mike. Can't go wrong with green on the surface, covers so many bases. It will get warm sometime soon. Nate
