Fireline issues

I've been experimenting with 20lb Fireline for some string leeches and intruders, with mixed results. I've got a couple of questions.

What are the best knots to use with this stuff? For the string leeches I've gotten the best results with a perfection loop and drop of superglue on the end to attach the hook. For the intruders I form the loop on the shank of the hook so that is no problem.

What do you use to cut it? It is pretty hard on my tying scissors.

Thanks,
Lane

i seem to tie my string leeches different than most. i use a loop that runs from the hook shank to the rear hook, i just loop through the eye of the trailer. i run the loop through the rabbit hide with a needle so i can just bunch the strip up if i need to change out a damaged hook.

as for cutting it..... i use my scissors- kershaw serrated- and i have no problems. i just cut the fireline (or spiderwire stealth in my case) to the proper length before i tie it on so i don't have to trim it again. a good sharp knife or fingernail clippers will do the job also.

if you insist on tying a knot to your hook then use a 6 turn uni knot. i've never had that knot fail with fireline while bass fishing.

I'm no whiz at this but on my bucktails I've enjoyed using the last few years with trailing hooks, I just tie in a loop of line on front hook shank with kevlar thread/epoxy and then build the rest. Intend to do similarly with intruders.

  • lay down a wrap of tying thread on lead hook shank, wrap thread back over itself in tight wraps/loose spacing
  • lay down matching ends of line loop (mono or fireline etc) (I make mine long enough to replace rear hooks etc) on tying thread, tye in, epoxy, then build rest.
They've taken a real beating from coho/silvers and never had one separate.

On intruders etc at a local demo I observed, they recommended using a high rated fireline (80 lb as I recall/old stock?) as it was stiffer and therefore kept hook in line better. I bought a meter or two of it to get me through the first few rounds.

PS, if using mono for these line loops, cut your mono lengths and put them in a drinking straw in a warm glass of water......takes all bends out and you get a very nice fold and straight/even ends for tying in your line loop. Great tip another passed on to me.

PSS, tin snips/nail snippers/carpet knife etc works fine for cutting fireline if you're sparing your scissors.
