This piece would make a fine photo essay in Swing the Fly magazine, or similar. My hat is off to you my friend. It shows me that one can have his heart warmed and be jealous as hell at the same time. I love Yorkie's admonishment too. Emma likes steelheading, and is learning to drive - it won't be long before she is stealing sips of your good scotch too. Enjoy.

Adrian,
Great story and incredible memories made on Emma's first die hard steelhead trip. Great job being daddy guide. Your unselfish investment in tutoring Emma and keeping her safe on the water paid off big time! Her first two inaugural steelhead on dry flies...who does that?!?!

Such an awesome accomplishment for Emma with raising, hooking, and landing those magnificent steelhead and great job of guiding by dad. We were all jealous of Emma's success, especially the guy who can only get hatch brats!

As I said, the river chose Emma! Most of us go indeterminate amounts of time for any opportunity to tangle with with those unicorns down there.

I am truly honored that Emma decided to try my flies. That little ninja in that big buck's mouth looks like a tiny speck! Afterall it is tied on a little size 8 mustad s80 (3906 equivalent).

Just a truly amazing trip for the two of you. Emma's fate as a dry fly steelheader has been sealed!

Look forward to seeing you both again on future adventures.

Todd

Beneath this experience between the two of you, lies countless hours, days, weeks, months, and years of time in relationship together. You've affirmed her strengths, helped reveal her passions, and taught her to pursue excellence. These are some of the richest rewards of parenting. Thank you for sharing your journey.

What a great experience!!!! Makes me very excited for the time when my son will be able to (and hopefully want to!) join me on fishing trips. Some good parenting right there!

Steelhead23, funny thing about the Scotch: I had a wee nip of Lagavulin from my flask in celebration of our last evening on a famous pool. Emma made this guttural sound behind me as the aroma of fine single malt reached young nares. I flashed a look toward the retching sound and laughed as she exclaimed, "Aaccck! How do you drink that?!"

Thanks for the kind words, Rich.

HandPlanedCane, great to see you again. Wonderful pictures. It was fun to share the campfire with you there.

808Steelheader,
She loved your pattern. I recall 2 moments: I tied on a Steelhead Caddis on her tippet one afternoon. This fly had actual feathers from Bill McMillan. The pattern was tied on a gold downeye gifted from Steelhead23. It was waking and muddling in and out of the surface, Emma rose a steelhead with it deep in a tailout but didn't connect. She then said "It doesn't stay up like the Wang".

At another time I tell her that I should have brought a tying vise so she could experience raising a steelhead on her own fly. Emma counters,"Why? There is only one fly needed and it's the Little Wang".

Great to see you and Wendi there.

Adrian

Beautiful story Adrian!!

It was great seeing the older pictures as well, and her progression over the years. My little 10 year old caught her first unassisted trout ever on a dry fly on Fathers Day, and I was so proud and thankful, and that glow that lasts for a long time.

For Emma to accomplish this on such a difficult piece of water, on a dry makes it more unreal. It just goes to show sometimes its meant to be, and no matter what the difficulty or circumstances, you just have to give it your all and good things will happen....and memory of a lifetime made.

THAT right there, is what fishing is truly all about!

Cheers!!

This is incredible in every way. Speechless, and even a bit onion-eyed.

Congrats to both of you.

idk what I expected when I scrolled to 'new posts,' but it wasn't this!

Congrats to her on the gorgeous fish, and to you both for the quality time. That story will live forever in the family.

Adrian, this is an epic thread. I am so happy for you and you daughter Emma. What an amazing trip you both had. I know that sometimes it is easier to leave the kids behind and get some 'me' time on the river. I admire your selflessness by including your daughter in your passion for dry fly steelhead. It takes time and patience and sacrifice. It is so great that she got to taste success more than once on a difficult piece of water. EPIC THREAD. Thanks for sharing this story with all of us. Cheers.
