I am in the market for a classic reel to match my new Meiser 11' 7" 6/7/8 Custom. I will be getting her finished in the next few weeks and would like to have a classic reel in hand to put on her. I have been mulling over a Bougle MkVII 3 3/4 or a Spey Co River Switch. However, the River Switch is not available and there is no timeline for the finished product to be ready.
Any suggestions from all of you about a great match for this little beauty?
BTW - If you haven't ever dealt with Steve Godshall or Bob Meiser you are missing out on two of the finest gentlemen in the business. These guys not only build amazing tools, they are two class acts!
Having fished this same rod extensively over the past three years I would have to say my preference is for a Hardy 3" 7/8's Taupo. The rod is very light in hand and the Taupo balances it perfectly about 2"-3" below the top of the foregrip; if fully lubricated with red sauce the reel is pretty freeze resistant. I fished an Able Super 7 on the rod before the Taupo and it was a bit on the heavy side for this rod- and also prone to freeze-up. I have no trouble landing 10# plus steelhead on this combo and the lightness of the complete outfit makes it effortless to cast all day...
Enjoy the new rod and whatever reel you put on it!!!
Thanks to everyone who is taking the time to give me their feedback and experiences. Yes, this is a very light rod and a good match is important. Also, thanks to a couple of users who have PM'd me with their suggestions.
Tight Lines to Everyone...now off to the JD to chase some steel...
