I've just acquired an older (70's) Hardy Marquis #7 reel, but its spool is missing some crucial parts (handle and latch ).

Im hoping I can make this a fishable reel with someones help.

i'm looking for anyone with one of these scenarios.

A) a complete spare spool
B) someone who might have a cracked spool with the parts i need on it or
C) another reel wtih 2 spools i can make 2 reels out of.

I suppose an old Scientific Angler System 7 would work too.

Any help sourcing this would be much appreciated.

PM me with prices and shipping.

Thanks in Advance.

I was wondering if that was true for my reel as well, I watched a youtube video that shows an older scientific angler reel interchanging with a newer hardy marquis,

but if I look at the hardy website there is no information and the spools look a little different .

My local shop doesn’t have one in stock but I’ll keep checking if they get one in.

I would reach out to William Archuleta. He does a great job repairing vintage Hardy’s and other reels. You can either send the reel/spool to him to fix or he may be able to send the parts, or at least will know where to get them. Pretty sure he is on the forum (@Hardyreels I think?) but here’s his website:

Another option is Mike’s Reel repair, which stocks some of these parts on their site. They do repairs but I’ve had a hard time getting a hold of them in the past, and Arch is known as the best around if you want to go that route.

The Marquis LWT reels - the new models - aren’t interchangeable with the old Marquis ones. I wish people would call the new ones the “Marquis LWT”, but even Hardy is to blame for this since they don’t even print this on the new ones prominently. Personal pet peeve - people selling a Marquis LWT and calling it a “Marquis”.

The old SA System reels ARE the same reels as the old hardy Marquis, including complete spool interchangeability. But while the numbering is the same up to #7, the 8/9 Marquis is the same as the 8 SA, and the 10 Marquis is the 9 SA. For whatever reason the Hardy ones always seem to go for higher prices than the corresponding SA ones. I guess that is just about the romanticism of the Hardy name. I think while Hardy made them for SA, at least at the beginning, the SA ones were ironically the first and “original” ones before Hardy started selling them as well.

In my experience, while you can get lucky at random moment in NA, the most reliable place to get an extra spool will be from one of the Hardy sellers on eBay in the UK. You might even get a “brexit” discount on the exchange rate. The prices, even with the shipping, are pretty reasonable.

Archuleta can fix/add the handle for sure. It may be a bit expensive fixing such a “low end” reel, but if you do that you could get something extra cool like a wooden one. You can tell people it was an extremely rare model that had that handle and they one ever made 10 of them for celebrities :chuckle:

Still, I’m sure a new plastic one will be cheaper than a whole new spool.
