I’m probably showing my ignorance here, but somewhere in the past I feel like I heard the actual contents of the “greased line” book was the same, or nearly the same. I’ve never been able to get confirmation of this, and have never seen a copy of “fine and far off”. I suspect this is not the case, but can you say how they are different Bruce?

The “greased line” book is pretty awesome and especially for how useful it is now, being from a whole other time. Most of the other older fishing books I’ve read were interesting more from the curiosity point of view, but that one is quite relevant as an instruction book, even now.

I would highly recommend Fine and Far Off as a must read for all spey anglers. Jock Scott provides anecdotes and instructions on spey casting and fishing with his long time friend, the Wizard of the Ness, Alexander Grant. Fine and far off presentations is the term Grant described as his casting style. Now we know this as spey casting. The book is a treasure trove of instruction and methodology of Grants casting, his famous Vibration rod and his salmon fishing strategies. He compares these techniques with those of another notable highland angler, Percy Laming. A E Woods technique of greased line fishing is also critically discussed and compared. This is a unique look at the genius of Grant’s casting and angling style that will help a modern spey fisher improve his skills as caster and an angler.

Greased Line Fishing for Salmon is the companion instructional treatise on salmon fishing by Jock Scott. This famous work is a discussion of the inventive salmon fly presentations of Arthur E Wood. Scott was a fishing buddy of Wood and this is the definitive guide to swinging a fly. Wood’s greased line techniques remain popular with Atlantic salmon and steelhead anglers to this day. Although he cast single or double hand overhead and roll casts with his 12 ft cane rod, all spey anglers can learn from this read as his techniques were honed and perfected using his double handler.

Don't discount the public library system. You would be surprised who all they are linked with. My local library found a copy in a university library somewhere up in northern Or. Had it shipped down here to my local. I had it for two weeks, free.
