Chances are high.

From US is what they target the most at customs. If the declared value is under say 100$, it has a much better chance slipping under the radar than if the declared/insured value is high.

When you use the courier companies like FedEx or UPS etc, you almost always get dinged, but with national post offices, you have better chances.

I've ordered a number of items from the UK, shipped via Royal Mail and never had to pay any taxes/duties. They also arrive pretty quickly! Your experience could be different, but that's mine.

Thanks for the info pulled the string and bought the reel regardless. It was what I've been looking for a Hardy perfect left hand wind modern version with short foot and line guard, even got spare spool and pouches included.

Now comes the hard part. The week or two of anticipation until it arrives and frequent mailbox checking for the delivery slip

I've never had to pay any Canadian taxes or duties when items came into to Canada from the UK. However some UK vendors leave the VAT on, they are supposed to remove the VAT on items sold to purchasers outside the EU.

Jusk ask the sender to ship it as a 'repair'
In most cases that will do.

My best memories are not too old!!

I've had an item sent from the US as a repair/warranty, it worked out.

As for the UK, i bought a rod 2 years ago shipped via Royal Mail. The first rod never arrived at my house and got lost, when they shipped the second one it came in just a few days with no duties or taxes. Purchased from a credible online store.

If you are buying from a private seller using paypal its best to follow the rules, falsifying information can void your buyer protection.

According to the law, you would pay tax and duty. I'm actually in the middle of a dispute about 4 different cases. They are suppose to charge duty and taxes on everything except returns, exchanges, and gift. In my case, even the gifts were taxed. What I noticed is depending which border the item goes thru. Some are more lax than others.

Thanks for all the info. It is whatever it is. The reel has been shipped and I'm taking my chances either way. It's the reel I've been looking for so if I have to pay duty or taxes I will just swear and pay it.

Congrats!

I hope you let us know how it turns out. I've never had to pay on a reel coming from the UK, but none were over ~ $150, so It would be interesting to know if they took a more serious look at a higher-priced item.
