WTB: Switch Reel

Hello,

I'm somewhat new to the swing game.....I purchased a Scott A3 11' 8wt switch rod on here a while back and am now looking for a reel to go with it. Really looking for something that has a diameter of 4.5", and something that won't break the bank. Thanks in advance!

4-1/2" diameter reel on a switch rod?

That's something you don't see every day.

Trying to find one in that diameter light enough to balance a switch rod could be a challenge. Orvis made a 4" diameter cassette style disc drag reel some years ago, and there are still some around used. Its called the Rocky Mountain Large Arbor model. I still have one, and that model would likely match up weight-wise on a rod like yours. The cassette spools are quite handy too.

Orvis also made the Battenkill in a large arbor style (fixed spool), around $100 used.

Both reels are less than 8 oz., both around 4" diameter.

For what its worth, on my 11'6" 5/6 baby spey rod I run a Hardy Zenith multiplier (3" X 1-1/2")--fast line pickup, but daintiness to match up with a lighter shorter rod.

Just because no one understands you doesn't mean you're an artist...

Redington Behemoth 9/10 + Spare Spool

4.4" in dia. I've placed it on a few of my rods, otherwise both appear new. I'd sell the package (reel w/ 175 yards of Rio 30# orange dacron backing, extra spool, reel case and spool bag) for $125 shipped.

Unfortunately I do not have a reel to offer, but I own the same rod and use it with a Galvan T-10 (4.25 inch diameter, 8.2 ounces). I have found that reels in the 8oz to 9oz range (empty) balance the rod around the second or third ring from the top of the grip.

I would agree that is a big reel for a switch rod. To each his own though. You should look for an Echo Ion, they are fairly light and perform well for the price +/- $90. You can sometimes get them used on here for half that.

Personally I like a 3 1/2" Perfect on my switch but that is a bit more than $90.

Looking for an inexpensive (but good reel) and quite surprised at the selection to choose from. Went 'click' and my new reel should be here in a few days.

I have a Hardy St Aiden that is in very good condition. Asking $200.00, inc. shipping

I use St Aidens exclusively on my switch rods.
