Don't Forget to Check FEDEX for Shipping Costs...

Figured I'd post this as we all have goods coming and going at some point and the USPS is getting more expensive every year. I'm packaging a rod to send to its new owner and I generally default to USPS Priority Mail figuring it's $15 or so for a 4pc rod...maybe $20. Built my label on the USPS site and the total for a package under 3# was $32 shipping just a few states away. Checked UPS and pretty much the same number and then FEDEX. Shipping totaled $22 shipped and insured and 3 days delivery. I know my Canadian friends need USPS to limit the fees imposed by UPS, etc but CONUS shipments are sometimes considerably less expensive via FEDEX and I've always had good luck with their service.

Just figured I'd put this out there as a "Public Service Announcement". No need to reply to the thread as it will bump the classifieds listings. Just figured we could all save a few bucks.

Thanks for the heads up! I have noticed that USPS has been getting a bit pricey for tubes and long boxes. Will definitely price out FEDEX for CONUS.

Echoing the cross-border sentiment:

Always use Canada Post or USPS when sending across the border, as it avoids hefty import COD charges which leave a nasty taste in anyone's mouth, and rob you of whatever savings you made buying from board members.

I've been burned twice so far, and I know that it may entail a trip to the local post office, but your buyer will really appreciate it and enjoy their new treasure all the more

I get hit up for a dozen flies by a batch of salmon conservation groups in the maritimes every year. Since their cause is so near and dear to my heart, I'm always happy to oblige. BUT....5 years ago I could send a dozen flies in a little 4X4X1 inch box for $2.70. The other day I sent 3 such boxes and it cost me $9.70 per box. I could easily spend $100 bucks if I fulfilled every request, so I'm really going to have to get selective. I just can't afford that anymore (not to mention the cost of a good hook these days).
Thanks so much USPS. not.

The Fedex brokerage rate when shipping from the US to Can. when I had a rod shipped from the States was very reasonable. $10.00 if I recall correctly. I do not know what the current UPS rate is, but in the past I was stung (once, I might add) $35.00 for the brokerage fee alone

when using fedex but sure to check "dimensional" weight as that is what they go off not weight of box. UPS got stupid and changed to dimensional weight a year ago..(that's what happens when you put the bean counters in charge) since then amazon does their own deliveries and mail and fedex ground have almost doubled in my shipping department and UPS is down to half...

recently I bought a book from here . I'm pretty adamant about using usps as I'm in Canukistan. The vendor said shipping was $10 for the heavy book which was a great deal, but had already sent the package to me. I was really very pleasantly surprised when the book arrived at my door in 3 days ( might have been 4) this was some sort of record, with zero additional fees attached from fedex. I dont know if this was a one off anomaly but yes I was very pleased... I need to check into the fedex deal for future shipments from the US...

** edit to add: I spoke too soon as today in the mail I received a bill for $17 from Fedex for above mentioned book that I had purchased here. I was right to be pissed off because the seller had sent the thing before confirming with me my preference of shipper. And this is why. Almost 2/3 of the total purchase price was in extras in gooddammed fees and bs that isn't even counting the 37% canadians are getting crucified on our dollar..... I will never take anything unless its USPS. End of rant.
