A Passion for Steelhead - Dec Hogan

Mike

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles (spey rods). Doug Larson

Take only photographs, retain only memories, leave only a good impression of yourself, perhaps just footprints.

Your lines, your rivers, your way!

This book set the standard by which all others are judged. If you can only 'get one,' this is 'the one.'

Slight edit: If tieing 'just' flies for Steelhead your book is "Steelhead Flies" by John Shewey. What makes this book so good is all the 'pictures' (page after page of SBS's) are in colour. You really get to know what the end product should look like .... a Good Thing.

agree with above for classic PNW steelheading, the history and how-to. Both Combs and Hogan are great reads.

will add ...

for fiction: "Northwest of Normal" by John Larison

for broad coverage of how-to-angle beyond classics and swinging: "The Complete Steelheader" also by Larison

for the soul of our rivers: "May the Rivers Never Sleep" by the McMillan duo

for one of the best ever place-based books: "The Color of Winter" by Doug Rose

I am also looking forward to Sean Gallagher's forthcoming book for a mix of the above

I just got Dec Hogan's Book, "A Passion for Steelhead" and I have to say, it makes all the other fishing books I've ever bought look like a huge waste of money.

I agree with what many, especially SSpey have already listed.

I have a friend who is just getting into the sport. Two weeks ago he had open heart surgery. He asked if while he recuperated I had any reading material about double handed fishing and steelheading in general. I took over both Trey and Dec's books. I told him if we wanted to learn how to fish, read Dec's. If he wanted to read something that would make him want to fish, read Trey's.

This x100. Just finishing it, and thoroughly impressed. Learned a ton, and his ..well passion...really shines through the text.

I like "Advanced Fly fishing for Steelhead" by Deke Myers. got it when i was first starting out.

theres some how-to stuff for rigging that other books dont cover.

What I lack in skill --- I make up for with enthusiasm.

I agree with both Dec's book, and Trey Comb's, and I'd ad John Larison's The Complete Steelheader. Excellent book, covers swinging and sh.

"Dry Line Steelhead" by Bill McMillan... will change the way you approach steelheading forever.
