"Classic Salmon Fly Patterns" by Michael D. Radencich

Published by Stackpole Books, 2012. 346 pages

"Celebrated salmon fly aficionado Michael Radencich compiles the most complete collection of classic salmon fly patterns ever - 1,738 classics from the golden age of tying. Radencich has done his research, first assembling the literature of the 1800s through the 1940s and then scouring the books to find the buried treasures hidden among the more recognized gems.... he has enlisted 86 world-class tiers from 17 countries* to tie the flies. Over 1,000 color photographs."

This book comes with a companion 82-minute DVD of Radencich tying and explaining a full feather-wing Durham Ranger.

Going through this book, I mentally connected to a tv program I watched a few days ago. Classic Atlantic salmon flies bear the same relationship to steelhead and Pacific salmon flies as I know them that the costumes of Victoria's Secret runway models bear to women's sleepwear. With the last chapter, Modern Fly Patterns, the book departs completely from the realm of fishing flies into the exalted sphere of artistic fantasy.

*Any contributors to "Hooks, Feathers, and Floss?," I wonder.

I can think of a few of us on here. I'll start a thread with some of my flies from the book. Maybe others can add some (reshot) pics of their flies.

was asked to take part (like many others) but declined due to inexperience and a fluctuating interest.

I appreciate the classics but prefer free range 'artistics'.

disclaimer: the general hierarchy knee jerk reaction to 'freestyler's attitudes' is they can't tie the classics well enough to comment.
maybe there is some truth to that. but should anyone really care?

regardless, I look forward to owning and perusing mike's recent work.

cheers,
shawn

Shawn,

First off I’m not your mate.
