Steelhead Flyfishing Books

Hello all,

Could someone recommend some books on steelhead fishing? What are your favourite books on the subject?
Im not so much looking for books that tell you how to rig up a line etc, as for books in the spirit of Roderick L Haig-Brown.

I really would like to travel to the PNW and do some steelhead fishing, but since that isnt in the foreseable future Id like to read som good books on the subject

Cheers,
Jonas

Oh, almost forgot to add that dvd:s on the subject are also of great interest

Here are three to start you off. Steelhead Water by Bob Arnold, Frank Amato Publications (1993); Steelhead Country by Steve Raymond, Lyons & Burford (1991); and Steelhead Fly Fishing by Trey Combs, Lyons & Burford (1991).

Unfortunately, all of thes are out of print but a search of any of the online used book sites should bring up copies at a fair price.

Regards,

I have so often met ardent anglers throwing flies of such wondrous deformity,... (Lt.-Col. John Henry Hale, 1863 - 1950)

A small treasure of a book that roughly fits your criteria is "A River Seen Right" by Michael Baughman. It is about the North Umpqua, and includes some photographs by the late Dan Callaghan.

While not totally about steelhead fishing, "An Angler's Astoria" is an easy, enjoyable read.

I have several of the books listed above, and Trey Combs' "Steelhead Fly Fishing" is likely at the top of any book list describing the fishing, rivers, and anglers that know some of these rivers very well.

Bill McMillan's Dry Line steelhead is a wonderful combination how-to and why, coupled with his conservation viewpoint based on his years of study and experience.

as far as i am concerned there are three books worth having on the subject of general steelhead fishing.. Many other books are worth having that talk about destinations and such but for general steelhead knowledge there are in my opinion 3 good ones

Bill Mc Millian's Dry Line steelhead and other subjects..

this book will teach you to think for yourself in developing your own tactics and to develop how to think as both an angler and a conservationist.

Micheal Boughman's A river seen right

this will teach you how to care about a river..

Dec Hogan's a passion for steelhead

This will give you the nuts and bolts of steelhead fishing and also help you care about the river and the fish that swim in them..

The other books i have read we so dry and soulless as to entirely miss what steelheading is all about...
