Bogdan

Purchased and read the book, "Bogdan". The book does a pretty good job showing and describing Stan Bogdans life and the reels that he made. These reels are infamous in the Atlantic Salmon fly fishing world. If your like me, a gear junky, somewhat mechanically enclined, and are intrigued with these simple little machines, this book is a treasure. Stan is still alive and his son in continuing on the tradition of making the fine reels. Stan's reels are quite amazing and are somewhat hard to obtain. Reading the book inspired me to purchase one of his reels............hope to try it out on a light spey rod.

I spent YEARS trying to buy a 300M!!
Being impatient I bought a knockoff from Mr. Wurm in Germany. A good reel! Then I had a few knock-offs made for me in the UK as well as picking up a mint Guideline Alta (limited run). Some of these appear in my avatar. Other than the Hardy Perfect I use nothing else. I look forward to getting a copy of this book in the very near future!

Tweedside,
You might be curious to have a look at the Paul Hermanson reels that are for sale on Len Codella's website, I think it's www.codella.com.
Did you ever get your 300M? I had the good luck to call in the middle of a batch and only waited 4 mos. It's a great reel.

Thank you dsteady,
I have had a look and as always find Len's list interesting. Some years ago I had some knockoff 300Ms machined and they are so good that they do everything I want. It is sad, but that machinist was excellent and has since died. I also have some German knock-offs by Herr Wurm. They too are fair but not too good from reel to reel.
I am at present arranging for a small batch of close to 400M size reels to be produced by machine trainees/apprentices as part of their final tests. (These will be for my own use only and none are to be sold). They should answer the need for a full length Carron line! The 300M is too small without resorting to gel backing and I loath that stuff...I have enough risks when wading without wanting to sever fingers as well!!

Best luck,
Tweedside.

Tweedside,

I too am of similar mind. I'm currently making my own trout model and in process of designing a Spey sized reel. Both will have a disc drag in lieu of the drum design. While the drum design is robust, it is not as smooth as a disc drag and requires more start up inertia to get it rolling. I would be interested in seeing some of your reels if you would'nt mind sending a picture or two?

Well...I bought the book, here in Kelso of all places. (Tweedside Tackle has started selling really top fishing books..They even have the 2Vol. Cascapedia tome by Hoagy Carmichael instock. I dont know the US cost of the book on Mr. Bogden, but it costs the equivalent of US$ 95.00 over here in the UK.

I have only had time to flip over the pages, but the first impression is that this is an extremely good, well produced book with an absolute wealth of information - especially the oddities such as the 5 1/2" Alta reel. A worthy new member for my rather small but select library.

I would like to see a similar book published with Hoagy Carmichael as the subject! After all his contribution to fly-fishing is very large, his own books are superb. And he gave so many people so much pleasure and information on Mr Garrison.
Also his own skills with bamboo rod making are not to be sneezed at...his rods are as good as they get! On a personal note it was Hoagy who introduced me to Mr Bogdan's reels when he showed me his (perforated) 300M whilst visiting the UK. (I lived in London back then about 20+ years ago.)

Brian

Such a book would make an excellent member of my library!!
