When you say shooting head are you talking about a skagit head, or a scandi head?

If a skagit head is what you have in mind then 600 would seem a good place to start.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Touch-n-go casts are usually not synonymous with skagit heads. 600 grains does sound good to start with, but most anglers will do sustained-anchor casts with sink-tips instead of polyleaders. Chances are that you are blowing the anchors!? Slow-down a bit more and keep at it.

the flies i swing are large nymphs and standard steelhead flies average sizes four to ten and the streams i fish average four foot at the deepest. i dont have any problems with the scagit outfit i am now osing but at times the chinook are much too heavy for the outfit i am now using so i want to change to a scagit line on the heavier rod. thanks for the input , cpr
