Swinging Flies for Steelhead

I recently produced this video for our local Cable 14 TV show. They were looking for fishing videos that featured waterways in their catchment, so I produced this one as a pilot.

It's shot in "survivorman" style as I'm operating alone without any support from a crew. The video is meant to be more about the river, the fishery, and some ecology issues, rather than a fishing tips video, nevertheless, I had to talk some fishing to fill the time.

Afterwards, I thought that it could be of some use in our Spey basics forum.

The takeaway?

Buy a spinning rod, procure some soft baits, catch steelhead.

Cool video. You obviously know your river. Nice hook up caught on film. It was fun to see the fish kick up some water.

"He's off. Shoot." Shoot? Really? I thought that among our highly advanced steelhead skills was the ability to cuss like a sailor, particularly when mykiss shows you a fin. Hat's off to you Peter for not using the words we all know you wanted to. Lovely vid - and hey, you could show this one to your kid.

It's this one:

It's been very effective for me over the years, taking steelhead, walleye and smallmouth.

Thanks for sharing, Peter. It’s always great to get a fish when rolling the camera.
Looks like nice water and I concur with all of the tipsthat you provided throughout the video.
