Holding the line.. top or bottom hand?

I was doing some practice casting today on my local river.. and as my casts are - occasionally - just good enough to shoot 5-10 feet of line, I realized I don't know which hand I'm supposed to hold the line in when executing the cast. I tried it both ways. I also observed that sometimes if I just pinch the line to the rod grip, it slips a little during the cast, at the wrong time..

I further realize that when single-hand overhead casting, I depend on feeling the line tighten and pull on my line hand to sense the rod loading, as much as I do feeling the rod bend with my rod hand. With two-handed casting there is no such thing, eh?

Experienced casters, which hand do you hold the line in, and do you merely pinch it against the cork, or do you hold a small loop or something to get a tighter grip?

Thanks!

Pinch it against the cork with the index finger on my right (top) hand.

Any loops I carry are in my left hand.

I used to pinch it off with my bottom hand and release it from there, but now I do it from the top. This works well if I only carry two loops. I hook the second on my pinky finger.

I normally hold and pinch with my upper hand but have also pinched with my bottom hand and top hand - I am normally using a skagit system and use a pretty fine running line so I make pretty long coils that hang below me in the water so can probably limit to no more than 3 big coils for most distances I am fishing and I don't get tangles too often
