Line advice

I am new to the forum and to spey casting so my knowledge is very limited, but I need some help. I have a 13'6 8 wt orvis shooting star with an (orvis recommended) beulah elixir 8/9 line. This line has about a 30' head.

Is this a long enough head? For very short casts it was rolling out fine, but when executing the double spey I am losing my anchor every time. when I let more line out to secure the anchor, I am into the running line which won't load the cast. Again, I am very new, and maybe I just need to adjust to everything, but would a longer head help here? Is there a recommended "beginner" line that will work better while I am learning?

do you have a tip on the end of the line? I use to use rio versileaders of various sink rates with my elixer. A 15ft or even a 10ft with a leader of a few feet should make a difference. Assuming you haven't got a tip on the end of the line. If you don't want a tip on for whatever reason try increasing length of leader/tippet.

Watch the Mike Kinney vids using the skagit line, you'll see how using strokes closer to your body with the shorter line helps to maintain your anchor compared to a longer head with wider strokes....if that makes sense

They loaded me up w/ the elixir switch line instead of the elixir spey. 520 grains vs. 480gr, and yes I'm using 10' poly leaders w/ tippet. Looks like I need the spey line.

Try slowing down your moves, shorter strokes closer to your body & increase your tippet length.
