Define A Skagit Please

Please excuse my ignorance but could someone precisely explain or define what is actually meant by a Skagit Taper Line. I ask this in the context of being comfortable with the other following definitions.

1. A one piece line with a 50-75ft head & belly = a short/medium spey line
2. A one piece line with a 75-100ft head & belly = a long spey line
3. A two piece line comprising running line & 35-50ft head = a Scandanavian Shooting Head
4. ? = A Skagit Taper

Also, are the primary casting styles used with Skagit Taper lines based upon the single spey style but more compact as with scandinavian shooting heads?

Any wisdom much appreciated.

A search on the board will get you a lot of information. RIO's New Modern Speycasting has a couple of good sections on the general technique. Dana has some good information for subscribers. Basically it uses a shorter fatter head type line, usually 3 to 3.5 times the length of the rod. Contact with the water is also used to help load the rod. The rods tend to be shorter and a more traditional or through action. The advantage is the ability to fish in tight quarters and to use heavy sinking tips and large flies with control.

Here are a couple of the threads:
