Casting Question

I was out again tonight and I am doing something wrong. Fishing on the right bank and I am right handed. Doing single spey with the left hand up. My point P (Simons term, where line hits water) was always behind me not in front of me where the video says it should be. Any ideas why or would someone have to watch me?

Could be that you dont have enough line outside of the rod tip and are using to much effort in the sweep hence landing your anchor to far behind. Dont become to focused with point P, a yard either side is good enough as there are other elements to perfect as well like 180 rule and use of your hands 50/50 and the high and abrupt stop of the forward cast. As you become more proficient with the whole package you will then be better able to find point P more consistently.

It sounds like your rod tip is going too far back.

It is not because thing are difficult that we dare not venture.

Leo -

Could be a number of things, but let's try to whittle it down...

Where is the fly when point P is behind you? It should be well out in front 45 degrees upstream even if the bottom leg of the d-loop touches the water (point p) behind you. Is this true?

Put your hands in position they would be when you make your leftside dloop. Yes right now Does the bottom hand rise upward and outward in front of you? Let's say almost as high as the top hand (but further out of course)?

How much line is contacting the water? I am talking the actual line, not the leader - 3 feet / 6 feet / 12 feet?

Does the line feel heavy coming off the water and make a shearing sound possibly with white spray?

As far as I can tell the line is straight. I think I am kind of doing a side -ways over head casting back cast. I don't know if this makes since but in the videos it is shown left bank right handed and that seems to be the way my brain is programed. I can't get to a right bank where I can wade yet due to water height to try it right handed. Maybe that won't be any better. But I sure as hell aint giving up. There's always a bad day or two for all the good ones.
