spey without the rod

i watched that FFA show that aired on OLN and it's just added to my curiosity of the casting style. honestly, i don't plan on getting a two-hand rod (yeah right), but i do have a few 'normal' rods in my collection.

i've heard that you can perform spey casts on a single so i'd like to try it out. should i use my 9'/8wt, 9'/6wt, or 7'/3wt to learn these casts? i imagine the 6 is a good place to start. will WF line suffice? i don't want to try and learn it'll only hurt.

thanks.

Any rod will do though the 6 or 8 would probably be best to start with. Any line will do also. I would highly recommend watching Rio's International video - Simon has a great section on spey casts with a single handed rod

Get Instruction

and you will make progress much faster. The best line is a long belly weight forward or a DT for the single handed rod, so you probably laready have something that will work. The up-side is that it will revolutionize your fishing. I have been able to migrate two handed techniques to the single handed rod and am able to fish easily in places where it was difficult to impossible before.
