New to Spey

Last week I saw the Redington Spey rods on sale and decided to finally buy one. (Mike from Redshed got me thinking about it last fall while I was fishing the Clearwater.) I bought the 12'6" 7/8 figuring that it would be good for the "smaller" waters here in Maine. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience fishing these rods for trout (non- anadromous) and if anyone can reccomend any books of videos on spey casting.

Loads to choose from:

Videos -- International Spey Casting by Rio Products
Spey Masterclass by Derek Brown

Books -- Spey Casting by Simon Gawesworth

I have both videos and have watched many times. Most of the sponsors have these in stock I would imagine. Don't have much experience on fishing long rods for Trout but someone chime in.

Cheers - Hansen

I second Ragatz's recommendations - you will not do better than those. In additions keep an ear open for any "Spey Claves" or casting get togethers in your area. If you can get out and play around and get a little friendly help it will shorten the learning curve - better yet find an insrtuctor and get a lesson or two.

Tight lines - tyler.

I like the videos mentioned above as well. Also for a newer spey caster I also like the John and Amy Hazel video.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Trout! There you go. I just finished an article about trout fishing with spey rods. The link is http://www You'll need to repair the link, non-sponsor links are discouraged here (and rightly so). Also, if you want to drop me a line, my email is [email protected]. I'd be happy to swap stories and tips.

My next project is trying to locate a WindCutter 5/6 fast sinking tip (if one is made and if I can purchase it separately) to throw these suckers:

Thanks for the info. Zach, I'll read the article and get back to you. Now I've got to find the time to get out and practice.
