In the interest of using the Lightspeed 3.5 that I already had, and not go out and purchase another reel, I spooled on 150 yards of 20 pound spectra backing behind the Windcutter 789 tips line.
If I decide to target larger fish, I'll be stepping up to a bigger rod and bigger reel , but for now this will do me for Steelhead and smaller Salmon on the 7/8 rod that I'm using.
Keep in mind that I'm an utter Spey newbie and while I have managed to lose all 3 Salmon I've hooked due to ineptitude on my part, I did not feel underpowered on the 20 pound class fish (per my guide) that I hooked. This fish barely took me into the backing on the first upstream run, and not at all when it turned and ran downstream. YMMV of course.
