Here is the Good about what you guys accomplish when we gather. Thanks so much for your generosity!

In the winter of 2008, Spey Nation was hatched as an idea for a few guys to get together, drink beer and cast some spey rods. The idea was catchy and supported. The byproduct was a little seed money to some dedicated guys adding soul to back to a river.

It was an early experiment in December of 2009.

Here is what the club found out.

The eggs hatched later than the eggs in our regular hatchery. The water from the stream was initially colder than the water which feeds our hatchery.
The fish started to feed on their own before we started to feed them. Apparently, they were feeding on material being drawn into the tank from the pond.
The fish grew faster than the fish in the hatchery. This is due to warmer water and less crowding.

Spey Nation III donated the club more time and breathing room for a struggling operation which brought them more luck from a company named Harden Furniture dedicated to a concept of sustainability and something which can only be described as soul. They donated land, time, and a bit of treasure to the project.

A club which was going under due to heavy economic and time pressures is now on the verge of greatness. The DEC approves and 3 tanks will go online soon and prepare for the return of the king into natal water.

A work group is planning to meet at the hatchery at the Harden Dam site in McConnelsville around noon on Saturday, Jan. 8th, to continue installing the tanks and piping in order to get our new hatchery ready for the delivery of the eggs this month.

The work will continue on setting and securing the fish tanks, then assembly of the 2″ water lines from the supply tank to each of the fish tanks. Once these lines are hooked up the fun will begin… we will need to hook the 6″ supply line to the live 6″ water pipe coming out of the dam to start the water flowing through the lines and tanks of our new hatchery. The entire hatchery is designed as an environment-friendly (green) facility… No pumps or power will be required for operation of the hatchery.

The club is dedicated to doing one thing, Tom Schneider (President) told me on the phone last night, “Putting fish in the river.” It’s a noble and worthy goal. The byproduct of a Nation getting together for selfish reasons has been just that, the king has returned.

Update From the Salmon Folks. Remember, Your Donations at past Spey Nation Events made this possible:

Our new hatchery at the Hardon Dam in McConnellsville is now in operation, the eggs are in the tanks .

The eggs were picked up at the Casco Maine fish hatchery at 12:05 yesterday, left Portland Maine at 7:21 PM, arrived at Memphis TN at 1:34 AM, left Memphis at 3:54 AM, arrived in Syracuse at 6:36 this morning. The eggs arrived at Paul's house around 11 AM and were then taken to the hatchery by Paul, Dave and I at about 11:30 AM. The 60,000 Atlantic Salmon eggs were placed in the hatching trays in our 3 fish tanks of the hatchery, after a *final check of the hatchery was made.

*The outside temperature at the hatchery had dropped to around 0 degrees F. overnight and had gotten up to 19 when we arrived. Temperature of the air in the hatchery was a balmy 32 degrees. Temperatures in the tanks was 33 degrees and in-coming water was 35 degrees.

Ice was still present around the downflow pipe outlets of the tanks and on the legs of the tank supports, but none in the tanks. The air heater is running on pilot, but has not been fired up yet as it hasn't been needed down to 0 degrees, however, it is ready for any lower temperature excursions that may come.

Everything looks good so far, but there is still a lot of work to be done in caring for the eggs to get them up to stocking size fish

nice design - looking forward to it and the event

"The true purpose of a fly rod is to prevent its bearer from being arrested for vagrancy, for the delight of trout fishing is not the full creel but things seen and people met. A roughly dressed man idling with a rod in his hand is an angler; without it he is a vagabond." Sparse Grey Hackle
