Be there

Well, if all goes right (and it will) will do my normal annual arrival the Sunday prior to the Clave and camp and fish around the park the days prior to the events.

Looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces and getting to know some new ones as well.

For those wanting to camp, just remember that the campground has almost filled up the last two years by late Thursday evening.

See you there!!!

Rphelps:

I am arriving in PDX early in the AM on Friday, and heading right out. I was hoping to pitch a tent and camp, but am concerned about the campground filling up.

Do you think it is reasonable if it was full that I could "double up" with someone's camping spot, or is it different than a Park Service campground with dedicated camping spots? Or do you think a tent could be set up not in an assigned camping slot and not get hassled? I have a hotel reservation right now as a fall back, but would rather be able to stay at the park and camp.

Appreciate any advice, as this is my first time to Sandy River, and first Spey Clave too. I am looking forward to it, and meeting some of the community.

I will have single malt and Alaska smoked salmon with me.

Camping spots

Hi AK,

A lot will depend on the weather. All the camping spots are numbered and there is no just set up a tent in the woods sort of scene. However, you can have more than one camper or tent in a spot. I'm sure there will be folks there that would be happy to have you in one of there spots (others can chime in as well). I would say you could pitch your tent behind my trailer in my spot but I think I am going to have some family come on Friday night and will need a tent site. However, you can look me up when you arrive and see me to find out if they are coming or not. I will be in and out of the camping area on Friday as want to see the women doing their casting demo.

In the campground I will be camping in a site near the bathroom area in the first camping area. Look for a 16ft white Fun Finder trailer with a silver grey Toyota FJ Cruiser parked in front of it.

I'm sure you will find a spot whether one of your own or sharing with someone else (especially since you are bringing such a nice beverage, just remember to keep the bottle sort of hidden as there is supposed to be no such beverages in the park, but we all abide at times, just keep it cool).

See you there,

Thanks for the sound advice so quickly... and the generous offer. I am getting totally jazzed about attending this event! I have half a notion to change my ticket to Thursday.

We have two more days fishing before the trout season closes here in Southcentral Alaska until June 11, so I am headed to the Kenai River to swing big uglies with the spey rod tomorrow. Here fishy fishy...........

Yes, be especially careful with the spirits. As Ray says, because of the park rules, but also know there is a special strain of squirrels that inhabit the Oxbow Park campground during the Sandy Clave. These rare squirrels are known far and wide as being VERY thirsty!!!

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Old Squirrels!!!

Funny you guys!!

Personally, I found that it was really only the old squirrels that seemed to gather around the campfire and beg for the best beverages! Some did in fact have beards and that's how I was able to determine they were old! Most had gone from campfire to campfire to determine who had the best liquid refreshments and then they just settled in for the evening. Some after a while kind of dozed off and started squirrel snoring!

I'm really looking forward this year to spending more time with the old squirrels; I just wish they wouldn't doze off as the evening progresses as it seems they have a lot of wisdom to impart if they could just stay awake (just kidding, I guess I am now one of those old squirrels, but don't think I doze off just yet)

I'm leaving at 0 dark 30 (actually 4:30) and driving down from Puyallup for breakfast :-) with some fellow anglers and will stay overnight in troudale saturday.

Looking forward to the clave and seeing everyone ... might wear my "speypages" sweatshirt... as ID ...
Hopefully the river will be in shape and casting will be more on the river and less on the lawn this year.

the line up of demonstrators is as good as ever.

looking forward to it.
