Chicago-area, Spey Cast About Saturdays

There will be a couple of very informal gatherings on the Fox River at Glenwood Park in Batavia, IL on Saturday mornings in October & November. Note: these are not Claves. Meet early, have coffee and throw a few lines. I believe Aaron Reimer, with his River Run Angler's fly shop www.speyshop.com in Carnation, Washington does something similar with his Day at the River program. It would give those interested in spey a chance to see a casting demonstration and to cast a couple of rods before they take the plunge. And, it would give those of us already committed to the sport a chance to give back, talk steelheading and maybe meet some new fishing buddies. Again, I am talking very informal and meeting from 8:00 am to late morning, with a focus on the Chicago-area folks.

What: A chance to see spey casting demonstrations from area instructors, cast rods, and talk steelheading. No experience or spey gear required.

When: October 13th & November 3rd (with the possibility of a December date). 8:00 am in the morning until late morning?

Where: Glenwood Park in Batavia, map to follow.

What to bring: Spey rods if you have them, but there will be rods available if you are new to spey casting, and fall & winter steelheading clothing and waders. If you are new to steelheading, steelheading clothing means: GLASSES, preferrably sunglasses, a hat or cap, long sleeved shirt or fleece/jacket depending on the temp, fleece under your waders (the water will be colder than the air temp), gloves, etc., depending on the time of year.

Coffee and breakfast pastries will be provided. There is a pavilion and restroom at the park. Nearby Geneva is a great shopping and lunch venue if you want to bring your spouse. Some of the local instructors may offer private lessons in the late morning or afternoon, details will be posted here. I will also set up a web page on UMFF with details.

If there is in interest, we can do it again next year and do it earlier in the year, i.e., August & September.

Unhappy Darn!!

I am new to two-handed casting. I have been single handed casting for about 30 yrs. I am down on the west-central side of Indiana close to the Illinois border. My son just moved to Chicago, after graduating from college, two weeks ago.

See why I was so excited when I saw the title of this post?!

But I have to work the NCAA pre-national cross country meet on Oct 13 and I am scheduled to be fishing with Peter Humphrey on the Muskegon on the 2nd.

Peter is giving me lessons now...he is a MUCH better teacher than I am student!

Jack Cook has been putting together a 'pile' of spey equipment for me (his words)...I can't wait until it arrives.

Anyway, that was a very longwinded way of saying I would love to make one of these formal or informal gatherings around Chicago at some other time and meet some of the folks posting on here.

Thanks so much.

Jeff,

Maybe the November date will work for you. It looks like we are going to have a good turn out for the first one based on the PM's and emails that I have received so there is a good chance that these will become regular events.

Thank you for the kind offer, but not at the Spey Cast About Saturdays. It is Kane County Park District property and my name is on the permit. If you want cast different rods with me, I will have my waders on. I am, however, hoping that the group will recovene at a local restaurant for lunch, comraderie, and libations. It is my hope that we will establish a Chicago/Upper Midwest/Great Lakes Spey/steelheading community.

Why do you NOT think that there already is a community in existence?

Gary,

Of course there is, that was worded poorly. Not sure what I meant to say, probably had something to do with spey comraderie in the Chicago area; just disregard that last line.

OK, since I tripped myself up by not proof reading, let's try this: after the Spey Cast About Saturdays, I will reserve space at a local brew pub for lunch, comraderie, and libations. My treat for the first round, all are welcome.

can't wait!

Is the park on the east or west side of the river? I assume north of North Ave...I am somewhat familiar with the area. I will be coming from up north down 25 or 31

It is on the west side of the street, off of 25. South of Wilson in Batavia and north of Butterfield Road. The park sign is very small, I will have another sign out.

good idea

Ive always liked the grassy banks, great wading for large numbers of people, and more tranquil setting of fabyan park in batavia; plus; a little closer to 88. But its neat to see you doing this. However, if youre trying to actually catch fish while doing this, the dam is much better, albeit urban.

Good luck!

It was a nice group of two-handed anglers that showed up on Saturday. Great group of people, the weather was perfect, there were nice rods to try and the park worked out nicely. It was only when we were packing up the vehicles that we realized that no one snapped pics.

PLEASE NOTE: after talking it over with some of the folk on Saturday, we will NOT be holding a casting morning on November 3rd as most everyone will be at the November 10th Muskegon gathering and our GL's fall steelhead season will be in full swing. We will resume the Chicago-area Spey Cast About Saturdays in 2008 after the spring run.
