Simon Gawesworth Casting Demonstration

I am not sure if posting this is against the Forum Rules.....anyways I see Simon Gawesworth is having a casting Demonstration at the up coming Fly Fishing Show on January 20th & 21st, here in the heart of New England's Spey country. I am hoping that I can make it, anyone else? It would be great to meet some other New England Spey casters... I don't even have a full year of Spey Casting under my belt yet, so I am anxiously looking forward to this demonstration. I didn't think, again I am newbie, you could pull off a Spey Demonstration in one of the typicall casting pools. Anyone care to share some insight?

marlboro show

this will be also my impetus for attending. great new addition to the marvel of the casting pool. i suspect his switch cast and overhead and turbo spey techniques may dominate but i hope to capture idea of his hand movements and timing of and size of his "D" loop. would be great if demonstration could include moving water, as that would be worth registering for a mini master class/clave demo. at least i hope to shake his hand and thank him for upgrading my fly fishing narcosis. also thinking of steelheading that weekend. could have the DSR to myself the weekend of new englands only FF show.

Question FF Show

I 'spose 'tis in Marlboro, MA and not Marlboro, VT? Where is Marlboro, MA in relation to Boston? I have a daughter down in Marshfield, MA. Maybe I could stay at her place.

Gawesworth

I took class from Simon in June 2005 in NY state and then saw him do a demo in January 2006 at the NJ fly show. I learned a lot. The NJ show had small shallow casting pools and he did his demo using a standard 9 foot single hand rod. Since then I've used some spey casts on my 3 weight trout rod w/ some success.

In my opinion a chance to see Simon in action is worth quite a little drive. He is an amazing caster and a really nice guy as well.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

The casting ponds at shows are impossible to show change of direction spey casts. That being said you will still have a great time seeing Simon's demo as he is one of the best and probably the best ambassador of the sport of fly fishing. He is very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. You will enjoy meeting him.

Have fun.

Been there seen that, want to see it again.

Simon was at the New Jersy show a few years back and he was using a switch rod for demonstrations. He was able to make many different casts in a still water casting pond. It was about 75 feet in length which abutted a wall at the far end. His casts had so much power that you could hear the line smack the wall at the far end. He acomplished this by standing in the pool at the near end off to one side. What really impressed me was that he was talking to people while doing his casts with what appeared as no concentration on his part as to what his hands were doing and concentrating on what he was saying to the crowd. Just standing there talking and banging out great cast after cast.
Don't miss your oportunity in see him.

decision time

was holding out to see simon in person at marlboro show. unfortunately the casting pool demonstration schedule does not list him as participating as it does for other venues. i suspect he will only be shaking hands and signing stuff at the rio product stand. for me time off is quite valuable and i just decided to change my plan and stop at the show on friday on my way to pulaski. the water is to drop to 750 on thursday and i think i will spend my time with the swing and step for the weekend afterall. sorry i wont see some of you there but time on water seems to be the most productive lesson for me this weekend.

What time is the casting demo?

FleshFly, I plan on attending the show Saturday morning in Marlboro. I received the brochure for the show but cannot find what time Simon is putting on the casting demo. Please advise.

Thanks for the kind words from everyone. It is nice to know that people enjoy the demonstrations as this makes it totally worthwhile doing them - even in the limiting area of a fly show casting pond!!

I am sorry to say that I won't be at the Marlborough show - not the organisers fault at all. They had booked me and advertised it but I just do not have the time to come to the show. RIO will be there with Marlin Roush, our head of production if you have any RIO questions, but I will be in Idaho.

I will be at Somerset the following week, though and really look forward to meeting anyone that has half an interest in spey casting. It looks like I am scheduled to do a demo on the Friday and the Sunday.

I hope to see some of you there.

Thanks again for the kind words.. you made me blush....

Cheers
Simon
