Sounds like a great time to me also. There is a big speycasting presence at the Cowlitz River - I only wish I could be there myself.

Awesome stuff!

Simon and I had a great time at our first Nextcast Cowlitz gathering. The weather cooperated beautifully and we had a blast trying different lines and rods. We are going to try to make this a monthly affair.

Thanks to all who attended, it was a lot of fun.

Cowlitz gathering 10/4

Clearwater steelhead is running. I am afraid that none of us will be available tomorrow at Cowlitz. We are going to miss you this time out.

Portland Competition Cast Off - Oct 11

Portland Competition Cast Off on Oct 11 is still a go. We have more and more people interested in the event. Hopefully we can get together regularly as planned. I will see you at the casting pond.

Westmoreland Casting Pond

FYI the pond gets drained late October to early November, and remains so until late April to early May. It must be dry for at least 10 consecutive days in the spring for it to be cleaned and then refilled. Costs the city about $30,000 to fill it. Betsy Redfearn, with Portland Parks and Recreation, is the maintenance manager.

December gathering

Thanks to 8 participants, October gathering at casting pond was fun to see 8 people casting practice at the same time. Unfortunate, pond has no water still. So we are not able to have it this month. Maybe Feb 2015.

Is this going to happen for Feb?

Conservation is nothing more than the fight to save ourselves from ourselves, work that can only be done by ourselves.

Most likely won't happen this month. As others have said the pond is dry. There are alternative spots to consider though. Hopefully we can set up a day in March around the Portland area. We will announce the date here on speypages. As for myself I would be stoked to do a day on the water centered on casting technique and just hanging out with folks And having a good time. Low key and free! For those interested let us know.

Hey Brian,

A low key day on the water in Feb or Mar sounds good to me.

FYI,
On the east end of the St. Johns Bridge is Cathedral Park that has a large area of beach with protected still water along the Willamette River. I've cast there many times.
