CLA Game fair

Well its that time of year again, time for the CLA Game fair, the biggest outdoor show in the UK with around 200,000 visitors over the weekend, this one is a hell of a drive from Speyside but one fly fishing show I would never miss, and this year its a perfect setting in the grounds of Blenheim Palace.
The parties after each day are something to see, with the fly casting going on throughout the night, more casting competitions during the night than there ever is during the day.

Scott won the Speycasting distance comp last year with one go at qualifying and one go to will the final by quite a margin, not bad after not cast in competition or practicing for 7 years, there is another former world champion making a come back this year, should be great fun.

Good weekend if a little hot.

Big congratulations to James, definitely about time!

Qualifying results are here

And distances cast in the final are here, very close with less than a metre from 1st to 4th.

Already looking forward to next year.

Cheers

Ben

Cla

Great show again this year, I never really had time to watch the Distance Speycasting not even the practice, but congrats to James for winning it was time he showed his true form, as Ben has posted the result you can see there was nothing between the top four and it really looked like Gordon Armstrong would be the winner, casting much further than anyone in practice, and good to see him back at the distance casting after a few years absence.
One thing that was noticeable was the lack of Distance casters from Ireland, Norway or Japan at an event that used to draw people from around the world to compete, the interest in the distance casting events seems to be getting less each year, the CLA were going to drop the Salt water distance casting this year but decided after some protest to carry on with it for this year.
The CLA Game fair is made up of many different sections, fisherman's village, Gun Markers Row and then you have lots of other areas hosting all outdoor pursuits, Gun dog trials, Horse events, Gardening, outdoor clothing and a lot more attracting thousands of people, (50,000 on Sunday)
There is no doubt that the fishing village with all the distributors, tackle manufacturers, fly shops, fishing holiday companies is getting smaller each year while Gun makers row and the shooting area is unbelievably busy, so much so that some of the fishing holiday companies would like to move to that area, which i'm sure will be a no no.
Lots of rumours surrounding a major non UK fishing company just about to go into receivership, but I will say no more about that subject and if its true i'm sure it will be well known shortly..... and i will leave it there.
Working on the Scott Mackenzie DTX stand was really good fun and really busy, the reason i never managed to see any of the distance casting not even some of the two days of practice or qualifying let alone the final.
Scott has just brought out a new 6 piece travel rod that he has been working on for sometime.... and it is just about to be announced at fly rod of the year 2014.
Already looking forward to next year.
