Meet a young man, about 14-16 of age who watched me hook and pass the fly rod off to a lady who had never (other than tv per her) use a fly rod. Good experience even if I said that was not a norm.
Couple of nights later he and I were alone on the same drift and he brought up the past couple of nights 'activities.' Watched him use his rod and understood he was "into" fly fishing. Asked if he'd ever used a spey rod before, no, so do you want to learn some of the basics? 20 minutes later (I'm no great teacher, he was just a great student) hooked a rather beastly large salmon, 20 some minutes later fish popped the leader, but who cared. You could hear his hoops and holler a half mile up or down stream.
Wonderful young man but asked "why would you hand an $800 rod to some one you don't even know?" The answer is the Spey Clave, but that was probably beyond his understanding ... unless he'd been there.
Before the evening was over he'd used three different spey rods and a 10' Sage 7wt XP. "We" have him for life. Also asked again (but that's the 'beauty' of youth: "What did all those rods and reels cost you let me use tonight?" (Actual answer was about 3 grand) but I responded to the effect 'probably more than you could afford now.' Next question was to the effect of how did you afford them?' Answer was to the effect of how old are you? and that I was about 45 years of earning ahead of him.
Once a young person gets to use really good equipment just stay out of his/her way; the search for steelhead and salmon will be come an all consuming passion.
Life is good.
PS: Later in the evening this "kid" was using my 2001 7136-4 as a single hander and putting the flys about three feet short of the far bank. Damn this kids going to be good!!!!!! PPSS: that was about 100 feet of line plus a 15' leader. Gotta kill this kid, or at least not fish next to him and totally humble myself in public.

Hey Fred, good story, I think you should push him in and teach the whipper-snapper some humility before he gets uncontrolable. I hate teenagers with their cat like reflexes and phyiscal skills. I fished this weekend on the Trinity behind 2 18-22 year old flyfishers who proceeded to hit every spot a fish could hide. They couldn't be doing that good on purpose and I wasn't about to expand their ego by letting them know how good they really were. I ended up moving downstream 3 miles just to beat them to some of my own water. This is going to be a great steelhead/salmon year, isn't it? Thanks for e-mail with fish count phone#, I have been watching flows on the NOAA site, I will be heading up in a couple weeks to the Rogue, this weekend is rifle deer opener and I gotta go!! I need venison and more deer hair for humpy's. I will call or e-mail before I come so we can hook up. I got lots of new toys this year you can try, if that kid is around, I got some flies for him
