Has anyone cast any of the new Orvis two-handers? I've a friend who's been looking around for a small inexpensive trout-spey, and he was curious about these before he commits. We know what's out there by everyone else, but we lost our local Orvis dealer so we haven't seen any of the rods in this new line. I think he's wondering about the 11'4" 3 weight, but insights on any of the new sizes might be helpful. Just general impressions/opinions would help him out...rod weight, grain weights, action, etc.
I have not cast them but it looks like they come in nice variety of sizes and line weight ratings. Their sizes seem like an attempt to cover every need with a very specific length to weight rating. The rods also come with a 25 year warrantee and thats pretty good for a lower price point stick. Also, Orvis is really good to deal with if you have an issue or break something.
Thanks. My friend was curious as Orvis has done a fine job modernizing their singlehand rods like the Helios and Recon lines, and he has an older Orvis Access switch 6wt that he really likes.
Dan...seriously, it is for a friend. He just isn't on these pages. I got a Winston Microspey 4wt this spring. He's just trying to consider as many things as possible...or at least that's his excuse for still sitting on his wallet.
I fish an older Clearwater with an old 8 weight SH Rio gold trout ine. Casts well and works good for larger trout and smaller steelhead. To me it has more flex than my Echo 4120.
I started on a Clearwater 13.6 8wt, and although it served me well to start off on a budget (good price point), I have since moved away from it and will not look back. They flex quite deeply, but most importantly, are a fairly slow action. This requires an adapted stroke to this slow a rod. I didn't know Orvis had produced a new version of the Clearwater; mine is dark green. New Rod? or just new cosmetics? One the positive, Orvis covers their rods with an awesome warranty.
