Question New Spey Gear for 2010

Has anyone heard anything about any New Spey Gear (rods, reels, lines, etc.) that the manufacturers' have come up for the 2010 season?

I'm particularly interested in "What's New in the Wonderful World of Switch Rods and Light Speys ?

Here are a few things...

Echo is coming out with 10'6" 4wt and 5wt switchers.

Echo also has the new Solo 2 handers. The Solo rods are a 12'6"-6wt,
12'9"-7wt, and a 13'-8wt. These are 4 piece, with bag and tube. They are medium fast action and have a price point of $229.95.
I've had some Spey Pages members testing them and so far the consensus has been very positive.

In the line department Airflo has the Tactical Steelhead and the Speydicator lines coming out.

TFO has a new lightweight Deer Creek 12'6"-4/5.

NextCast is hoping to have the Winter Authority lines out in March.

There is the Skagit Flight from Rio, as well as some new sinking densities in the AFS heads. Also the Skagit Short as a head. Rio now has the MainStream spey line, a less expensive multi tip short head spey, plus 6' Spey Versi Leaders.

Simon Gawesworth has a new single hand spey casting book.

Mortensen's latest video on scandi casting.

I hear T&T is coming out with more switchers plus some new 4 piece models later this year.

Guideline has a new underhand dvd by Jan Erik Granbo.

Royal Wulff has the Ambush line with is a rocket for single hand spey casting.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Hey Fish Bear,
We will have a whole pile of new LIGHTER reels in 2010. A 3" SINGLE SPEY trout reel for $300 a 3 3/4" for $400 type both looking like the river spey models. Plus a new cage assembly with more choices in finishes and bearing types and new gearing choices.

WE now have a full line up of spey rods new for 2010. If you are looking for light, the 11 foot switch , 11 9" spey series is also very light.

We also have been working on a new type of sink tip material this also will be introduced in 2010.

Also with the great feedback about the tube fly store will be expanding the inventory

T&t

I saw the new T&T switch rods at the Somerset, NJ fly show. They had them there in 10 foot for 7 & 8 wt. The ones at the show were 4pc. plain black blank, and considerably thinner and lighter than their prior rods. Didn't cast them, because the ponds were so crowded, and they have a three minute time limit. They need to designate a spey area at those shows so that people can actually cast them.

New Spey Gear for 2010

Well at last after crazy sales in the UK, the full range of Spey rods from Scott Mackenzie the DTX range (12ft to 16ft) will make it over the pond next month, the fastest and biggest selling Spey rod range over the last 6 months in the UK by a long.... long way, already used by around 40 full time Ghillie's in Scotland.
I know Scott is putting every rod in the range through there paces right now, casting every rod personally at Ness-Side before dispatch to the distributor in North America.

I didn't cast any rods either ... same reason.

Best regards,

Here. About five steps forward and it's 20' down. I've used a Type 9 here. Hit bottom and fish.

2) belly tips are available in Sink6/7

Also the new MMD lines. These replace the Drury. 50' or 60' from the rod tip about the same length. 50' available in multi tip format also

Good stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Let's say I'm fishing normal flies (not dead chickens) during winter using 10 feet of T-14.
To get to the same depth I can get Hover/Intermediate/Sink3 (or Float/Hover/Intermediate) scandi head and use 10 feet extra fast sinking polyleader?
