Winston Spey 14ft #9 rod

I think I got a good deal on a Winston 14ft 9 wt Speyrod, but I can't find any information on it. Is there anyone who could tell me something about it?

It's about 10 years old but looks like new....

Hope you can help me....

If it is the Winston dark green color sounds like a Winston Spey Rod or LT Spey rod. If it is a translucent reddish brown color it is an Ibis model. It is not a Derek Brown Favorite because they were all 15 ft 5 pc rods. If you email R L Winston with the serial number they can give you the complete dope on the rod.

Thanks Halcyon, I think it;s a Winston Spey rod. It looks a lot like the 'Special" rod you mentioned but it is a 4 piece rod and weighs 8 3/4 once... I will mail to Winston next week end try if they can tell more..

Thanks again!

It could also be a Winston Vapor which are a Olive Drab army green color.

I have a 6/7 vapor and an 8/9 ibis so I will try to post some pics. I think the ibis was the predisesor to the vapor if memory servs. I just picked up my ibis about a month ago so I have not used it although I think the action is slightly faster than the vapor in the 8/9 weights.

You could track down AKcaster here on speypages as he is a Winston fan and winston rep. he may also know more.

first pic is the ibis brown/maroon, the second is the vapor, greenish. Both handles are pretty much the same.

ibis tube is brown, vapor is alum. green.

Let me know what you find out. what kind of rod did you end up with?

Thanks for the pictures Meigsrock. Seeing them I think I bought me an LT 914-4. It's lucent green rod with serial number 51981. Compared to my TFO-DC 15 8/9 it feels like a rather stiff rod, but then the TFO is really soft...

Wonder if there are some line recommandations. Found some on the Rio site and they go towards a 9/10 line weight. What do you think about it?

Her are some pictures of the rod... unfortunately i came without a tube.... So I'm looking for one

Please let me know if I'm right on the rodtype and about the perfect line on it.

Hope to hear....

Thanks Sieger

I have sold several LT Winstons and from the pics and your description I would say that is what you have. The 14'-9wt model is a cannon. A 9/10 scandi head will fly on that rod.

How you get the line out and fishing is personal preference so as long as it works and is easy no one should care but the caster. MSB

Your rod is definitely the LT Spey produced just before the Derek Brown Favorites as it has the downlocking maple insert reelseat and the smallish plastic butt cap.
As far as I know you still can get a replacement tube and cap directly from RL Winston.
This URL on the last page you will find the old Rio recommendations for your rod. This should give you at least a good starting point for grain weights for the various length heads that would work with your rod.

Thanks to you all guys... In the meanwhile I got an email from Winston with a little more info.

It is as you all said a LT 914-4 from 1-29-1997... According to the catalog it's supposed to be a Medium-fast action rod. Rio advices a quite heavy line on it(eg a Windcutter 9/10/11). I think I'll try to find a second hand one first just to practice....

And I since Winston still produces a 14 ft speyrod, I ordered a new tube...

So in the end I seem to have found me a nice rod.... Hope I can try it soon

looks like a great rod. I would start with the rio recomendations.
Your rod will take a 9/10/11 650gr or a 10/11/12 750gr line in a windcutter and a 650 gr skagit line.

I just happen to have a couple of extra lines that would be great for the rod.

I have a new scientiffic Angler Short head line 10/11 680gr that is right in that grain window and would be a good mach for that rod (almost the same as the windcutters). The line is a full floater and a full line so it is the head and the running line.

New line in box $50

I also have a airflo nw skagit head like new 650gr for $35 if you want to go that rout.

Not shur how expencive shipping would be but pm me if interested.

Thanks for the offer Meigsrock, but I think I will go to one of our local dealers and try to fit the best line ...

understandable,
besides alaska to the netherlands is half way around the world. You could probably buy two lines for the price of shipping.

Good luck with the rod, looks good.
