Deschutes fishing in late November

I'm looking for someplace to camp and fish around Thanksgiving. I was wondering if the lower Deschutes would still have steelhead in it at that time? I don't plan to boat it, just fish places I can walk, drive, or bike to.

On a related note, what books or maps of the Deschutes are must have for someone who has never spent any time on it?

Thanks,
Chris

BLM has a free on line map of the whole river, or you can buy same for about ten bucks. This thing is dead on to the 1/10th mile. Speaking to fishing/where better folks can give you info on that, but I'd say the upper part of the river in November. As far as places to pitch a tent the BLM has tonnes of them right along the river, most free.

Do expect nasty weather, so prepare for same.

short Answer. Yes it should still have fish. Maybe not allot but some. I would fish along the road from the locked gate above Maupin down to Mac's Canyon. You will also have the opportunity for some excellent trout fishing if you want it.

That would give you about 50 miles of Access to fishable water. Call the fly shops in Maupin and they can head you the right way. There are some good people running them.

Thank you for all of the helpful pointers.

And to 600Grain, nice work pointing me to Powells. I love that place.

There will still be bright fish moving into the lower river till after the first of the year. You'll find mostly tired hatchery fish in the upper stretches, but down low there will be more bright wild fish. Even with less fish around I often find I hook just as many in November as I do in, say, September. Lots of camping on the river, or you can grab a room in Maupin if the weather is bad. The water is cold, so the fish won't be as hot as in August, but you can sleep in and then fish all day which is a welcome change after fishing mostly early and late in late summer. Bring light sink tips to slow your swing and get you down a little, but there is no need to be scraping bottom.
