Honestly ?

Water conditions are less than good but not quite poor.

My guesstimate is this will be the lowest steelhead return in 20yrs......10yrs for sure, or close to it.

Sorry.....I know that's going to sting.

See for your self:

In 2006 and 2007 the numbers until August 25 were a bit weaker then 2013, but once they stop commercial fishery which laster until the end of August of 2006, the numbers improved noticeable and actually the first two weeks of September 2006 were at the high end of spectrum for that phase of the run.

2013 run appears to be inherently weak, as there was no commercial exploitation. Could be that 2013 is affected by a weak numbers in 2007.....
The 2007 fish spawned in spring 2008, and then stayed 2-3 years in the fresh water and 2-3 years in the salt.

it took about a 5 year cycle for us

THe difference is in the wild ( Skeena ) it is the grand predator: greedy humans who causes the problems......

“If you focus on the needs of man – not the needs of the resource – you meet the needs of neither!”

Like beating on the depressed stock of chum of the Dean to satisfy the a short term interest of commercial fisherman, for many it is probably a temporary summer job and they do not care if they will have a fish to catch next year.......

Compadres just returned after a week of pounding the water. For their efforts, they averaged one fish per participant. One landed the same fish twice, so not certain if that second fish counts. Pinks and coho were more cooperative according to the report, but I don't think they traveled that far for salmon. They were told that the previous week was even weaker in terms of steelhead.

Hope this helps.

The Tyee numbers don't look great, but you are heading into this with the right attitude Floyd. Just wait until you see those rivers - drink it all in my friend! We'll compare notes on our home river when you get back.

I'll be out there Sept 3-18 so if you have time after your lodge thing, look me up in Smithers. I'll shoot you a PM with contact info.

Skeena

We've been fishing for three days pretty hard jetting around west of town and no steel. Can barely keep the pinks off the end of the line, even in faster water when we normally don't expect them. Some beauty coho - one today came it at 19 by 32 and dime bright.

Received a TXT from a friend last night @ 11 PM.

Hooked 5 landed 3.
One guy.
(Of course, I will not tell you "where", exactly...and it does not matter, either)

Waters are going out all over.
..........
Recvd a photo of a 25# + fish, fly caught on a dry on a famous river a week ago...typical hero shot with famous guide holding the fish properly with his paying friend.

Tyee shmyee.
It is called Steelheading.
Always the same every year.

The Big fish and Big number guys may be disappointed this year or maybe not.

Mine is a personal report from yesterday.

Below is the first and only steelhead I've seen so far coming out (and staying in) the Skeena this summer season.

Fished the river all day. In this time every spot I tried to access was already occupied by others. The spots were 100km from Terrace and I was there at 7AM.

Guys were chucking in everything imaginable and I followed suit with both flies and lures. In the 10 hour fishing marathon I must have caught over 50 pinks, all of which came from one of the spots, blanked out on two spots, which had already been fished by countless other guys before me, hooked into one coho (unfortunately it was foul hooked by the dorsal) and came across this dead steelhead laying near shore among the carcases of pinks.

On the bright side, it was a nice day with no rain, I picked a bag of mushrooms and saw two black bears, one of which was a mother with two nice cubs.
