Sandy River Guides

Hey guys,
So I am making the trip down to the Sandy River Spey clave in May. I will be down for the whole weekend and am thinking about hiring a guide for the Saturday.
Any recommendations for a good guide?
You can PM me if you would like.
Thanks in advance!

I had a great day out with Marty Sheppard, who is good friends with Silvey. I would recommend a day with Marty in an instant. Hes also an excellent casting instructor. Either of the 2 will put you on fish in a casual sort of way. If you like being yelled at, call Travis.

I don't know, but I suspect one or both of them are on the program Saturday. That's the big day at the Sandy Spey Clave.

Could you come early or stay late? It might be easier to get with Marty or Brian on another day.

Why is Saturday the big day?
I havent seen any actual postings of whats going on which day. I thought the first and last would have the most stuff happening.
We (I am coming with a fishing buddy) are arriving Thursday evening and then heading back on Monday.
If we were going to miss one of the days, which would you recommend?
Thanks for the help guys!

For me Friday would be the day to miss. Friday is usually some type of free casting instruction at the clave, Saturday will have the majority of presenters, and sunday is about a half day of presentations. SIlvey and Marty are annual presenters, so I would be surprised if they didn't this year as well.

If those guys are busy, Travis Johnson might be an option for you as well.

Easy answer for 'names' is to contact Mark Backman at flyfishusa (the 'Clave Sponsor) and ask him for 'names.' He's an excellent Guide, but suspect he's going to be pretty busy that weekend.

But names/contact info of good folks should be pretty easy.

If I'm reading the Spey Clave page correctly and the list is of this years presenters, it seems like all of the people listed previously are working the clave. I don't know what their schedule is, but it could be a scheduling issue.

One person that I don't see on the list that has started guiding the Sandy is Tom Larimer.

Ted Neely is also a good Sandy guide. Ed Fast is another option. He guides mostly gear guys. However, he will take fly anglers. He floats a difficult section most don't do that has some good water. He is a good guy and knows where fish are. Just don't ask for a casting lesson. Matt McCrary is a great Clackamas guide. He runs a jet boat on the lower river.

Fred probably knows of what he speaks. Or Friday. Or Thursday. Saturday is generally the "headliner" day.

Wehre to stay while you're there.

A couple of options just crossed my mind: Camping at the Park and Mark usually has a deal set up with a local hotel (Best Western?) where folks 'get a deal.' On the later, his web site will give you the contact info.

If you intend to camp, and a lot of the folks do, the only thing you have to keep in mind is the main gate opens at dawn and usually gets locked at sundown. That last bit may be extended to 8PM'ish, but Mark covers that in his 'who/what/where and when.

Vis a vis the evening, if you're 'in' when they close the gate, you are really IN. And the reverse is true if you're 'OUT.' From the gate to the meeting area is one hell of a long walk; close to 3/4 of a mile if memory serves.
