Matapedia

Looking for info on this river for early June. Places to stay other that what I already found (Motel Restigouche). How fishable is this river without canoe? Doable without guide or guide recommended? How are the public waters and any tips on tbe best pools? Anything else use is most welcome. Thanks

I'm not an expert but maybe this helps. Early June can be tough. They have a run of BIG brights in May (not a lot of fish but a chance at a true 35 or 40 lb fish) and the better part of the run seems to be mid to late June and into July. You can definitely fish without a guide. All of the named pools are relatively good if there are fish in them. I would definitely recommend a guide for locating fish and having a canoe can get you better access even if you prefer to wade like me. If you fish with one for a few days you will have plenty of confidence when your on your own. I fish with Peter Firth every year. One of the best, hardest working guides I've ever fished with, a true gentleman and reasonably priced. If you'd like PM me for his info.

Matapedia

The gateway to the Gaspe peninsula and at the confluence of the the Restigouche. Plenty of great Spey water to wade below Cold Spring camp and above Glenn Emma. The Matapedia and the Casapscal are run by the Faunique in both Matapedia and up river in Casapscal. Just like the ZEC you can usually get water at a reasonable price. The village above Routhierville has food, fuel etc. and B&B / Geits. Any attempt at even the lamest French is taken with a smile and a polite reply. If you are fishing in early May the black salmon can be exciting I'm told but after this years run that may be disappointing as well.

Cheers,

Bill Guditus

I have been fishing the Matapedia for several years form mid to late June hoping to intercept the large fish that run the Causapscal. I fish the river from Routhierville to Causapscal as a general rule, but also in unrestricted pools near Matapdia village at times. At the Forks in Causapscal double handed rods are restricted, and the pool is usually busy as the area tends to be a social spot. As I do not speak French is another reason I do not fish it.
As mentioned previously all the pools can be good if there are fish around. This past year resulted in one hookup in 7 days of fishing. My best week ever resulted in 5 fish landed. Not a bonanza, but I have experienced much worse.
All of my fishing is done by wading, and in normal water I can get to about every pool I want to. But in high water, I am shut out of some.
I purchase a 7 day permit which entitles one to a 25% discount. The normal daily rate is between $70 and $80 per day. The permit can be activated on a daily basis if one does not want to fish every day, but I do not use this option since I only go for 7 days. I also purchase a C&R season license for around $30 as I care not to kill these magnificant fish.
There are places to stay in Causapscal, and St. Florence, and a new lodge at Routhierville. Jim Rusher also has soom accommodations at Routhierville. But choices can be limited. There are also 2 campgrounds that I know of. A Google search should give enough info to find a place. You might also contact the folks at www.cgrmp.com for additional information on the area.
Perhaps I will see you there although I do not have definate dates yet.

Jim

You can catch a lot of fish, and you can keep a lot of fish. But you can't do both very long. Jim Timmins

Mostly true .HOWEVER the big Causap. fish run much earlier than "mid to late June" . "At the Forks in Causapscal double handed rods are restricted' is no longer true .I for one asked that that "restriction " be removed .It was implemented due to certain 2 hander folk from the Ruthierville gang and les cons from France who insisted on demonstrating their prowess by casting to the other side of the river .Totally unnecessary as the sweet spot is right in the middle of the pool . After they posted this "rule", I'd go down and ask the crowd if they'd mind me joining in the rotation. I was NEVER refused and NEVER casting beyond what was necessary.
Best place to stay BAR NONE is les Chalets Aline in Ste. Florence .Best public fishing is also "around" there The Reserve's offices in both Matapedia and Causapscal are VERY tuned into what is going on on the river and a friendly approach will get you lots of info !!

Brian

Don't sweat the bad casts for they sometimes bring you fish
