I have been fishing the Matapedia for several years form mid to late June hoping to intercept the large fish that run the Causapscal. I fish the river from Routhierville to Causapscal as a general rule, but also in unrestricted pools near Matapdia village at times. At the Forks in Causapscal double handed rods are restricted, and the pool is usually busy as the area tends to be a social spot. As I do not speak French is another reason I do not fish it.
As mentioned previously all the pools can be good if there are fish around. This past year resulted in one hookup in 7 days of fishing. My best week ever resulted in 5 fish landed. Not a bonanza, but I have experienced much worse.
All of my fishing is done by wading, and in normal water I can get to about every pool I want to. But in high water, I am shut out of some.
I purchase a 7 day permit which entitles one to a 25% discount. The normal daily rate is between $70 and $80 per day. The permit can be activated on a daily basis if one does not want to fish every day, but I do not use this option since I only go for 7 days. I also purchase a C&R season license for around $30 as I care not to kill these magnificant fish.
There are places to stay in Causapscal, and St. Florence, and a new lodge at Routhierville. Jim Rusher also has soom accommodations at Routhierville. But choices can be limited. There are also 2 campgrounds that I know of. A Google search should give enough info to find a place. You might also contact the folks at www.cgrmp.com
for additional information on the area.
Perhaps I will see you there although I do not have definate dates yet.
