September...once again it was time for my autumn trip to the Umba river on the Kola Peninsula chasing some big Atlantic Salmons.
I arrived friday night in Murmansk and instead of staying in Murmansk for a night we all got picked up to head straight to the lodge. Flying with Aeroflot I was the last one to arrive...the rest oft he group spent some time waiting for me...sorry guys, but judging from the smell of vodka you must have had a good time;-))
After arrival in the lodge and some sleep we were already heading to our beats for a half day of fishing.
The river was in perfect shape and stayed like this for the whole week. After some casts I got a good pull and landed my first fish of the week – a nice 15pd male.
The week went on with lots of action and some really nice fish landed by the group. I was lucky to get a super fresh 25pd besides a 19, 17, 15 with 12 landed for the week. Like always I got my biggest fish on the top beat in Krievitz: Golden pool.
The last years a protection program was set up with guards on the river 24/7. And seems to pay off. The top rod of the week landed 24 fish in 6 1/2 days with some 20+pd fish in the mix. I think almost everyone in that week week landed a big fish (and no one got blanked;-))
The autumn week in Umba is always special. The leafs are changing colours, the mist on the river in the morning and the evenings / nights are spent with a good drink in the lodge with stories of big fish landed and even bigger ones lost. Unlike summertime when the sun never sets it gets dark by 7 or 8 pm – and its pitch dark by 9pm.
The only downturn this year was the fact that I stayed only for one week...
Anyway, I will be back in 2013.
