camping around Smithers

Heading up to Smithers in late Sept for three weeks this year and am looking for a good base camp where my buddy and I can stay, we will have two trucks and campers and a jet boat and would like to camp where we can have the boat in the river if possible, any recommendations from other campers out there? Showers and hookups would be nice but not a necessity and willing to look at all options including boondocking as we are set up to be self sufficient if necessary.

Do a Google search on Fort Telkwa RV Park.

There's a municipal campground in Smithers on the river too, it's right in town. Not sure if it's a good place to tie up a boat though.

Thanks for the input folks, JG are the spots your talking about on the Maurice just pull outs? or are there bigger spots where we could set up a base camp? Whats it like up there for crime? should we be worried about leaving our camp for the day?

Your best bet is to buy a Backroads Mapbook - Northern B.C. Most of the campsites on the Morice are listed but they are popular and fill up regularly.

Crime ?...........Steelheaders seem to be an honest bunch for the most part but there are always exceptions. I wouldn't leave anything of value in plain sight while away from your vehicle or camp but you probably need to worry more about the Grizzlies on the Morice than someone robbing your camp.

Backroads Mapbook & Google Earth.......study hard

There are some nice forest service rec sites on the Morice you could set up at. There's a nice run to fish at Lamprey too - caught my first steelhead there. I don't remember if you could launch a boat there though. You could put in somewhere else and meet your buddy at camp.

Be careful on that road on a weekday, can be lots of loggers.

The Morice is a beautiful river.
