Baja Roosterfish/Beach

Just returned from trip with tough fishing, no sardinas around, though plenty of big bait balls in the surf of ladyfish, ballyhoo and mullet. Anyone care to discuss their favorite plugs, flies or techniques when the bait is bigger than 10"?

No sardina?

On May 25th I fished for four days out of Bahia de Los Muertos 1 hour south of LaPaz on the Sea of Cortez. The first two days were full of anticipation, flat seas, cold Modelos, beautiful weather and no fish, no Sardina, no Darado, no Sardina, no Yellowfin, no Sardina, NO ROOSTERS! Did I mention several nice pools #%}^+=,!

The next two days were filled with DREAD as I knew in my heart that my reels and BEULAH SURF RODS and all the salt water fishing experience I had brought with me would not be tested. Did I mention NO SARDINA! LOL. Not really because this non fishing event kept on rolling for two more days. Not a shot at a fish. In fact we would bridle up mullet and saw Dorado run away. The last half hour of the trip I saw one Rooster landed on baited Ballyhoo (where did that come from).

RULE # ONE, The outfitter should have said after day two. "you need to pack your gear and I'll get you to where the fish may be because it sure isn't here! Or I should have said that to him. Should have, would have, could have!

We saw whales 30 feet away. We saw Thresher sharks jump 8 feet out of the water, we saw Marlin and Sailfish jumping but not a shot.

Oh well, oh hell maybe next time?

Slow Spring in Baja

We had a similar trip. Few people catching roosters on bait and big flies on big rods, but no sardinas to chum. We drove back on Mex1 through 6-7 military checkpoints. Shocking how rude it is here to ask someone about their citizenship, not like they don't get checked at home! Very visible military in most of the small towns on north of LaPaz, which was good to see given what you hear about. The beach fishing will wear you out, but it's very compelling with lots of big fish to throw at. You do need to figure out something they like, otherwise it's like trophy fishing anywhere. Nice when you have a month so you can get a few days where it all clicks, but am trying to research a better arsenal for the next trip.
