Deer Lake Newfoundland First Week of August

Well, the honeymoon has be now linked with a buddies wedding in Newfoundland. It looks like we will be flying into Deer Lake the first week of August. If there are any locals out there or people who have fished the area let me know. I would love to swing for some salmon, but I am open for specs or any other species as well. My understanding is that the run is still on but not at its peak. The better half would love a spa, so in an ideal world we would base out of some spa, that I would be able to escape from everyday and fish. We will be renting a car or RV to tour around so checking out several areas will not be an issue. Any info or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

August fishing will not be as good as July, but there will still be lots of places to fish.In the Deer Lake area you can fish the Upper and Lower Humber.Upper Humber will still have good Grilse fishing, good pools are Big Falls,Mistaken Point,Island Pool.Lower Humber should have big salmon there in August.A couple of smaller rivers within an hours drive are Lomond and Harrys River. You will need a non-resident licence and a licenced guide is required. For our smaller rivers a 9' #7 , #8 or #9 is adequate. For the Upper Humber the 9' rod is good but you can certainly use a small double hander,11.5 to 12.5.If you plan to fish the Lower Humber than a 13' #8 would be nice just in case you hook into a 25 lb fish.Lots of luck and enjoy your stay.

Fishing in western newfoundland

I would go to Big Falls (Sir Richard Squires Provincial Park). This is on the upper humber about 30 min from Deer Lake. There will be alot of people there but it is worth the dramatic view of seeing the salmon jump the falls. You will a have a very good chance to catch salmon there.

Perhaps the best time to fish the lower humber is actually in august. The trans Canada runs along the lower humber from Deer lake (the actual lake) to the humber arm (ocean). When driving to Corner Brook you will see many spots to fish off the TCH. Keep an eye out for the humber valley resort next to the small town of little rapids. You can fish just below the bridge. This is called boomsiding. Very good spot.

Also, you will need a guide.

Blue Charms, Cossebooms and orange flies are all good.

If you would like additional info please feel free to ask.

i hope to see you there!

Humber in August

Contact Rob Solo of Deer Lake (or pm me for his number) who guides on the Humber and loves to fish it! Also Andrew Moy of Tightlines Fly Shop in Parsippany and a sponsor is a big fan of the river and may be going there about the same time. Have a fun trip.

Me and my brother fished the humber last year mid July. Beautiful first day but got really high water for the rest of the week so it was really hard fishing (wading !)
We fished big falls and mistaken point and also some pool below a bridge down river. But the first day at big falls made the trip worth it ! Such a beautiful place, we dream of re living that first day again with good water levels. That why we are going again this summer, first week of July can't wait.

Enjoy your trip !
