John, who had only ever caught a few small salmon, but desperately wanted to have a chance at catching a really big one, walked into a church and started to pray. ''Listen God,'' John said. ''I know I haven't been perfect in my life, but I really would like to have a chance at catching a really big salmon, so I really need to win the Alta lottery. Could you please help me out.''
He left the church; a whole 6 months went by, but when the names were announced for 2010 Alta, his name wasn’t on that list, and he hadn't won the lottery.
He took stock, and decided that would try a different tack for the next year, so he walked into a synagogue. ''Come on, God,'' John said. ''I really need this chance at a big fish. I’ve bought all the right gear, and flies too. Please let me win the lottery.''
He left the synagogue: another six months went by, but when the list was published for 2011, his name was again missing, and he hadn't won the Alta lottery.
John then thought some more, and so, in advance of the 2012 season, he went into a mosque and started to pray again. ''You're starting to disappoint me, God,'' John said. ''I've prayed and prayed. If you could just let me win the lottery, I'll be a better person & much better fisherman. I don't have to win the best week, but just enough to get me even a small chance at a large salmon, and to be able to say, before I die, that I have fished there. I'll even give some of my fishing tackle to charity, just let me win the Alta lottery this time.''
John felt that his last plea, and plenty of prayers should do it, so he got up and walked outside.
When he was not 20 yards from the mosque, the clouds opened up and a booming voice said, ''John, help me out here ……buy an Alta lottery ticket!!””
