Smile Fishing the North Umpqua next week ...

The winchester dam fish counts haven't been updated since June. What has the fishing been like this year on the NU? I am going regardless since a day fishing on the NU beats anything else I can think of doing...

Not a ton of fish around but they are there. The cooler weather should shuffle the deck a little. Leaves are starting to turn a little, it's a great time to go.

In my experience the number of fish in the river does not greatly affect the fishing. I almost always average a fish a day over the course of a week, may not land them all but a hookup a day is about what I do every year regardless of how many fish are in the river.

A very late trip report

The North Umpqua got blown out due to heavy rain at the end of September, into the first week in October. I was there from September 28th through October 5th. I didn't touch a fish the whole time and my cousin only got one on, but lost it. The most frustrating week of fishing on the NU in the past 15 years of fishing the river at this time. I checked the fish count for the summer run. The '13 summer season was the poorest run in many, many years. I am hoping things turn around next year.
