Miramichi--Sink Tips Yes or No

I fish the Miramichi in New Brunswick near Blackville every fall. I get conflicting opinions as to the legality of sink tips with an unweighted fly. Can anyone confirm whether it is legal or not. Thanks...Jeff

sink tips

A fisheries officer told me he let a guy go who was using a spin cast with a fly and split shot on his line! He said technically the guy was legal because his fly wasn't weighted. He told me this in response to me asking him the same question you just asked. This was on the Miramichi near Juniper. The regulation book just states unweighted fly (page 11)

wannafish1,

Thanks for the info but to be sure I just called the Blackville DNR office. It is legal to use sink tips with an unweighted fly. So pending any hurricanes & river height, I'll be ready this fall

Jeff - have you ever needed a sink tip in the fall? I fish the Boiestown area every September, and have never felt the need. Just wondering.
Thanks,
Gary

Gary,
Twice after hurricanes come up the coast, I would have used a sink tip even T14. One year the river was unfishable as it came up over 5 feet! I don't wish for rain anymore...maybe a steady or light drizzle

Okie doke, Jeff, thanks for the info.
I'm heading up there Saturday for a few days of bomber fishing...hoping for a little rain every day! Weather ahead looks great, can't wait!

Gary,
Good luck! I'd much prefer Bombers over sink tips. My fishing buddy landed 14 in 4 days. Two days he limited out before the evening fishing. They had four in their group and landed a total of 28. I've never had it like that but keep hoping.

All my friends let me know ALL summer long what a great year its been on the Miramichi...while I hobbled around down here on crutches. I had two weeks locked in that turned out to be the very best of it. And the new fly I designed hooked 14 fish its first morning out. ETC ETC ETC.

Boy, i sure paid my dues this year!

Gary,
You can't just say your new fly hooked 14 fish the first morning and leave us hanging like that?
