Double-handed options around Red Deer, Alberta?

So just as I was getting into Steelhead fishing on the Clearwater and Grande Ronde, I get a job in Red Deer. (It's the only thing I landed all spring...)

I'd really like to continue using a DH rod, but until I can afford a switch, I'll have an 8wt T&T and either a 35' 460-ish grain Scandi head, or a 25' 510 grain Skagit to work with.
I've read that the brown trout in the Red Deer river are nice, if temperamental. Do I stand any chance with the gear I've got?
Anyone been to Red Deer and have any advise on flies and presentation? Or even a decent beginners hole?

I've never extensively done any kind of fishing other than double handed wet fly fishing for steelhead, so I'm all the way back at square one up here...
Thanks in advance.

Drive the 1.5 hours to Calgary and fish the Bow. You can swing big streamers using your two handed like I do. It's good practice before I hit the Skeena proper.

Shoot me a pm and I'll set you. Up with some spots to wet a line.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to try to get out this weekend after stopping by the local shop. 3-day weekend here. Woot!

PM me back if you get a chance. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime.

Red Deer River

The Red Deer River below the Dickson Dam is my go-to spot from Edmonton for 2 handed trout fishing. The Bow has more fish with large rainbows as well as Browns, but try the Red Deer at the dam for a short trip. I'm sure there are some good spots right in Red Deer, but Dickson Dam is quite pretty. I recommend that you locate Bob Eden at Stream Weavers in Red Deer, if you haven't already found him. He is an ardent instructor and guide and is into the two-handed thing as well.

If you like, I would be open to the idea of fishing with you. I think that there is only a handful of spey casters from the Edmonton area, but there are definitely others like you around Red Deer.

I have been obsessed with spey casting for the last few years and just spent a week in Scotland receiving casting instruction and fishing with some of the top guys in that area. It was Nirvana for me!

The Red Deer itself is an awesome little river with lots of opportunities for two handing. Like Louis says between Red Deer and Dickson there is a good chance at a brown or two. In the city and throughout you have a real shot at pike to 40", walleye I have seen up to 12 lbs, goldeye, and rocky mountain whitefish. It really is a beautiful river. I have recently got into the two handed thing and now that the river has cleared up, thats where I am heading. I also second talking to Bob, he is a good guy and very involved with "the friends of the Red Deer River" society.
