Help this guy:
A message from Fin Donnelly, New Democrat Fisheries & Oceans critic, and MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam & Port Moody
Over the past year and a half, I have been battling the Conservative government, working hard to protect wild salmon, the marine ecosystem and coastal communities from their harmful aquaculture policies, their refusal to ban dangerous oil super tankers off BC’s North coast, their resistance to come clean on their plans with genetically modified salmon and their flat out refusal to protect critical orca habitat.
I have also been dealing with the pacific halibut allocation controversy, the East coast snow crab report, Arctic Ocean, coast guard, lighthouse stations issues, and marine protected areas.
Wild Salmon Protection Campaign
Thank you for 'signing on' in support of my Wild Salmon Protection Act.
Bill C-518 aims to strengthen the Fisheries Act by requiring BC fish farms to move from harmful open-net systems to safe, closed containment. The Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has a mandate to protect wild salmon.
Thousands of Canadians have filled out postcards or signed a petition in person or online in support of my bill.
People in communities throughout the country, and in particular, British Columbia have been clear; they want the Fisheries Minister to take action to protect wild salmon.

Oil Tanker Ban in Northwest British Columbia
In March of last year, I introduced bill C-502 which would amend the Canada Shipping Act by prohibiting oil super tankers in the Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound.
In December, New Democrats used our Opposition Day Motion to push for a tanker ban in these pristine waters. It passed.

Genetically Modified Salmon
This March, I introduced a motion in the House of Commons that would require the government to provide clarity on the risks associated with genetically modified salmon on human health, our fishery and the ecosystem.
Sixty-three Canadian environmental, social justice and conservation groups have signed a letter opposing GM salmon.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans was recently taken to court by several BC conservation groups lead by Ecojustice. After a lengthy battle, the Federal court found that the department failed in their duty to protect critical marine habitat for the Orca Whale.
The Fisheries Minister now plans to appeal that decision.
During Question Period, I asked the Minister why she is wasting taxpayers' dollars and refusing to uphold her duty to protect the Orca habitat. Her response was disappointing and indicated that she did not have a grasp of the issues facing British Columbia or her role in protecting habitat and marine species. Thank you for taking the time to read my update. I look forward to keeping in touch.
