Georgian Bay

Good Day. I am knew to fishing with a Spey rod, and finally made it up to The Nottawasaga River at Georgian Bay this week to get in some practice. Can anyone advise when the steelhead run generally peaks in this river ? I think I was a little early, but did find the river a great place to start. Thanks.

Unless water flows are off normal patterns, 3rd to last week of April is when we saw a mix of bright and dark.
Haven't checked that area out in a while, tho.

Most people focus on the fall run of fish. Spring time is harder to target fish as the river is often up and moving fast.

Personally I don't fish it much in the spring as my normal fishing spots are dangerously high.

I prefer fall and 'peak' runs are usually based on rain events. Months Sept-Dec will have fresh fish moving in all the time.

Having said all that the Nottawasaga is a very challenging river to spey fish. The visibility is much more reduced than most other rivers. Fish holding areas take time to learn as well. Plus of course it's pounded by drift fishermen.

I've been skunked FAR more than successful. Nonetheless a place I love. if you're looking for more consistent results look further north to the Bighead, Saugeen, Maitland or Lower Grand.

tight lines.
