Good #'s of fish in Quebec rivers

There's a decent # of 2 MSW's and quite a few 3 MSW fish in Quebec rivers ,albeit ,VERY late !
Of note is that a large number of 5 to 6 lb FAT/well fed Seatrout are being caught . They are absolutely delicious I had to filet mine and 1/2 those ! Coated in hazelnut oil, on the BBQ

Not so good as it would seem

Well, the management in charge of the Gaspe ZEC ,IE: York ,Dartmouth and St, Jean went catch and kill on July 01 WITHOUT doing a count first .This "wise" decision was supported by the Qc. gov't MRNF AND the FQSA . Well, imagine what ! They did the count this week and due to the low #'s went C&R for Salmon !!
DOH, DO THE FISH COUNT FIRST and see what's in the rive rand THEN decide whether C & K is warrented !! Much better to stay C&R FFS .Especially since the York has RARELY ,if ever, attained its conservation level in recent years .

Sympathetic to the hardships you folks up there have to deal with Brian (smiling)

That is good to hear that the returns in Quebec are good this year. Iím going to Iceland later this month for my annual trip. The fishing there this summer has been a disaster so far. First they suffering from a drought so the water levels are ridiculously low. Then the returns are way down which the catches reflect looking back over previous years the catches are about at 10% of what they normally are for this time of the year. So for instance normally the catch statistics for this time of the year in the season should be around 500 to 1000 fish in a number of rivers and the catch is 50 to 100 fish. This is the case for many rivers especially on the West Coast where the water is extremely low. But catches are down even on rivers which are fed by more stable reservoirs or glaciers. Hopefully the grilse runs will materialize and are just late.

Thanks for sharing Brian! It pretty much fits with my experience on the Bonnie this year. The fish were trickling in...

The Gaspť rivers situation is preoccupying. The Catch and Kill decision still seems to take a great place in their marketing strategy. Other rivers like the Bonnie, who are 100% catch and release on their MSW fish, are seing record number of fisherman/ daysÖ. The decision has not been detrimental to people coming to fish there. Why would it be any different on other rivers on the peninsula? Hopefully the politics will soon take the back seat to fish conservation to maintain and improve the fishery (see, I can be positive!!! :0) ).
