Sandy next week

Hi Everyone,
My brother and I are headed to the Sandy next week to swing for 4 days. We arrive Weds. This will be our second time there and it has been a while. We plan to fish in Oxbow and a couple of other spots outside of the park. Anyone care to share a tip or two that might help us out? We are do it yourself guys most of the time and dont have the budget to hire a guide this time. We are mid skill level spey guys and have enjoyed success swinging for summer runs but are still searching for our first winter run fish. My understanding is that the Sandy can be better this time of year than the Clack but again if you feel otherwise we would be grateful for any advice that gets us going in the right direction. Thanks so very much everyone.

Cheers, Chris

I just got back from there; only fished a couple of days on my way back from the OP. I was told that the winter run on the Sandy is winding down now, while the run on the Clacka should be at its peak but this year that isn't saying much.

I didn't hook up, but did see a nice steelhead jump out of the water 3 times on the far side of the Sandy from where I was fishing. I couldn't have casted that far, but if I had been on the other side....

Both rivers were low and clear, but the night before I had to leave (Wednesday night) it rained all night and might have been enough to get some fish moving.

I won't post specific spots here on the interweb, but if you want to PM me I'll tell you where I was when I saw that fish.

Steelhead run is tapering down, though the fish that are around are big and can hang with springers.

Bring an 8/9 wt. and Chinook flies.

2nd:
Sandy is winding down.

Clack runs a bit later. There are winter fish, first of the summer fish, and I saw that a springer was hooked yesterday.

Thanks very much for the assistance and intel everyone that reached out or weighed in! My brother and I are only able to swing for steelhead once a year. We have kindof alternated between winter and summer run fish and this ended up being my first ever winter run fish! We hit the Clack hard for 4 days and I was fortunate to land a hatchery hen and a wild buck that went NUTS when hooked. Crushed my fly on the swing! We have taken several other "do it yourself" trips for winter runs and it was awesome to finally connect this week! Both rivers were well on thier way to blowing out yesterday and that was the end of our trip. Anyhow, thanks again very much for the help. Certainly two of the finest fish I have ever had the privilege of catching and releasing! Cheers and Tight Lines, Chris

congrats on a successful trip. Even without the fish I expect you would have had a great time but for sure makes the trip sweeter!!!!
